Agate Housing and Services helps people experiencing homelessness, and its mission is to end homelessness and hunger. One of the ways we relieve hunger is by providing 3 meals a day for our on-site residents and shelter guests. We also have a food shelf that provides groceries and supplies every Wednesday. Metro Produce has free fruits and veggies for food shelves and meal programs like ours to pick up every week.
We are seeking someone able-bodied with a van or SUV, who could pick up, and drop-off produce for Agate on a weekly basis. It takes roughly 1.5 - 2 hours to pick out the produce, load up a vehicle, and unload it at the Agate Food Center. With their help, our program participants and community members have better access to fresh fruits and vegetables, like every human should have!
Responsibilities:
- Transport fruits and vegetables from Metro Produce to the Agate Food Center weekly
- Filter out produce that is over ripe, or will likely spoil in less than a week
- Physically load and unload their personal vehicle
- Inform staff when produce is finished unloading
Training and Support
Geoff Meyer, Director of Site-Based Services, will be available to come with the volunteer for the first few times to show them where to go, how to pick out produce, and where to drop it all off. They will also have Geoff’s contact information if they run into any issues, need back up, or need to communicate updates. If the volunteer’s delivery timing or regular delivery schedule changes, they would ensure Geoff is informed of such changes.
Minimum Requirements:
- Owns an SUV, van, or covered pickup truck
- Physically able to lift and move 25-50lb objects
- Available to transport produce once a week
- Available to transport on either Fridays or Mondays
- Available to drop-off produce by 4pm at the latest
- Compassion, empathy, and patience for all human beings, regardless of housing status, mental health, or chemical health
- Preferred qualifications: kitchen experience, warehouse experience
Ideal Pick-up Days and Times:
Fridays + Mondays at 1PM/2PM
Tuesdays at 9AM/10PM
Pick-up Location: 2700 E 28th St, Minneapolis, MN 55406
Drop-off Location: 714 Park Ave, Minneapolis, MN, 55404
Impact:
This transportation support helps Agate relieve hunger using fresh produce for healthier meals and sides. The kitchen staff can cook fresh food, and the program participants and shelter guests get a fresh and delicious meal. Further, this is a food rescue opportunity, so the volunteer is also helping us reduce food waste and fight food insecurity in our local community.
