Hosted by the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention Orange County Chapter, his event gives people the courage to open up about their own connections to the cause, and a platform to create a culture that’s smarter about mental health. Friends, family members, neighbors and coworkers walk side-by-side, supporting each other and in memory of those we’ve lost.

Day of event Volunteer Roles:

Set-Up: Duties include setting up registration tables, organizing/folding T-shirts, getting snacks ready for before/after the walk, organizing honor beads, setting up remembrance signs, and anything else that needs to be done for getting ready for the day.

Greeters: Greet walkers, show them to the registration booths, food/water stations, restrooms, answering questions, etc.

Activity Table Duties: Volunteers will be stationed at various activity tables to assist walkers with things like honor beads, activities of hope and healing, and AFSP chapter resources.

Check-in & Registration* Duties (must be 18+ years): Registration volunteers will assist with checking in those walkers who registered in advance, those who still need to register at the walk, and/or those who want to turn in additional donations at the walk.

Route Sign Holder Duties: Duties will include holding a route walk sign, pointing walkers in the right direction, and keeping them on the correct path.

*Volunteer Requirements: Registration volunteers must be at least 18 years old. All other volunteers must be at least 16 years old.

Established in 1987, the American Foundation for Suicide Prevention (AFSP) is a voluntary health organization that gives those affected by suicide a nationwide community empowered by research, education and advocacy to take action against this leading cause of death.

AFSP is dedicated to saving lives and bringing hope to those affected by suicide. AFSP creates a culture that’s smart about mental health by engaging in the following core strategies:

  • Funding scientific research
  • Educating the public about mental health and suicide prevention
  • Advocating for public policies in mental health and suicide prevention
  • Supporting survivors of suicide loss and those affected by suicide in our mission
