We are looking for a culturally informed individual that enjoys working with youth to join us in our annual SYEP (Summer Youth Employment Program) in partnership with the MI-DNR (Department of Natural Resources). This is a youth employment program with 10-15 teenagers, aged 16-19. It is held outdoors, in various natural landscapes to engage youth with farming, gardening and natural resource-based education. We will meet Monday-Friday from June to August and often culminate in a week-long camping trip Up North. This individual must love the outdoors and feel comfortable providing mentorship and meaningful land-based connection with youth, facilitating activities and not be afraid of getting dirty! This position is supported by a Program Director and a small team of Centro Multicultural staff members and community partners.

SYEP volunteers must have the below skills/abilities:

  • Outgoing, caring, and compassionate attitude when interacting with teenagers.
  • Strong verbal communication and listening skills to converse with youth and parents.
  • Patience and stamina for keeping up with the demands of youth and outdoor activities.
  • Multitasking and organizational skills.
  • Bilingual abilities in Spanish are desirable but not mandatory.

+ Essential Role Functions

  • Coordinating and assisting with lunch pick up.
  • Chaperone field trips.
  • Facilitating ice breakers, team building exercises, scavenger hunts.
  • Supervise teenage youth throughout the program.
  • Work creatively, including but not limited to facilitating art activities, mural projects, and painting.

+ Requirements

  • Valid U.S. Driver's License.
  • Must be 20 years of age or older.
  • Complete volunteer application form and references.
  • All volunteers must pass a criminal background check and an informal interview with the Volunteer Coordinator.
  • CPR and first-aid certifications (if not, training will be provided by Centro Multicultural).

+ Education and Experience

  • +6 months experience working with teenage youth.
  • Experience or interest in farming, gardening, art, hiking or outdoor related skills and activities.

+ Schedule

Hours

  • Program Dates: TBD (Late June- Early August 2024)
    Flexible schedule Available days/times:
    • 9:00-5:00 pm Monday through Thursday
    • 9:00-3:00 pm Friday
  • Volunteer will commit to a regular time slot/schedule for the program duration

Work environment

  • Activities are held at several outdoor sites in and around Oakland County. Example: Trinity Farm and Centro Multicultural
