Strategic Planning Process Guide

Hunters Point Family is a dynamic organization focused on place-based, culturally responsive youth development, responding to years of environmental injustice, and making the city safer by providing jobs to community members transitioning back into the workforce. Having been delivering essential services to San Francisco's least resourced neighborhoods since 1997, we are ready to develop a future-focused strategic plan. We would love to have 1-3 skilled volunteers who can guide our team through a 3-month strategic planning process that ends with a draft strategic planning document. Stakeholder surveys were conducted last year, and the entire team interviewed, so some of the leg work has already been done.

Weeks 1 & 2 - Discussion with ED/Board President re: state of the org. Interviews with staff (some have also been program participants)
Weeks 2 & 3 - Conduct visioning sessions with board members, attend board/committee meetings
Weeks 3 & 4 - Work with marketing leads on board to complete impact market analysis and brand development
Weeks 5 & 6 - Share findings with the board/staff and field questions
Weeks 7 - 9 - Conduct theory of change refining sessions with board members, integrating community & staff feedback
Weeks 10-12 Work w/ED to develop Draft Strategic Planning document and presentation.

This is a rough outline of how we might work together. We're open to modifying it. The organization has experienced several transitions, including executive leadership shifts with the exit of the founding team, followed by the unsteadiness of the pandemic, and other normal challenges. We have organizational materials and plans available for a skilled volunteer to review. Staff and board are available to answer questions and give perspectives on past, present, and future of the organization. We have feedback from children, teens, and young adults in our programs to help the volunteer(s) understand the context.

Our strategic planning draft will be finalized after the draft is developed by the organization's staff team and then approved by the board. It will then serve as the basis for our annual plans and a guide over the next 3-5 years that helps the organization remember and meet its core community objectives.
