ORGANIZATION: Center for Volunteer & Nonprofit Leadership

Suscol Intertribal Council is a community-based, 501(c)(3) organization, founded in 1972 and reorganized in 1992, seeking to bring healing between the existing population and the people who historically inhabited Napa Valley and nearby counties. Since 1992, Suscol Intertribal Council has developed local educational outreach programs for public schools (K-14), community clubs, and other organizations. The organization continues to provide county-wide classes and annual events meant to bring the community together. Most classes and many events are open to the public. Suscol Intertribal Council has developed a mentorship program to help California Native people make connections with agencies, foundations, and corporations that might be helpful to them. Refering interested parties to the Bureau of Indian Affairs (BIA) for further contact with the tribes is ongoing. In 1998, Suscol Council purchased property in Pope Valley with the vision of creating a land base for Native Americans to preform ceremonies and gatherings to keep the Indigenous culture alive. Suscol Council has partnered with the Napa County Resource Conservation District to help preserve and enhance land stewardhsip.

Suscol Intertribal Council is located in the Napa Valley, believed to be one of the oldest continuously inhabited areas in North America. There is, however, no longer a land-based tribe in this county due to historical mass relocation and detrimental exposure to diseases.

Once a month, Suscol Intertribal Council organizes volunteer work days at the Suskol House property. Groups come together to maintain the landscape and structures that benefit resilient Native American cultures. Suscol Intetribal Council may also have a need for upcoming event volunteers, such as for the annual Powwow or Art Auction.

Mission Statement

We know that passion alone isn't enough when it comes to creating strong nonprofits. That's why we work with aspiring and established leaders every day to help them build the skills and connections that can take their impact to the next level. With confident and prepared leaders, our nonprofits will be better equipped to create healthy, happy communities. CVNL has engaged individuals in volunteerism continuously for more than 50 years and expanded to Napa county in July 2014. Every day, passionate individuals like you dedicate their work to advancing our communities, vulnerable populations, natural landscapes, and cultural institutions. But without the critical know-how in operational essentials like fundraising, board governance, and volunteer recruitment, their causes may fall short of their potential. CVNL brings local leaders the expert guidance and professional resources they need to build resilient, impactful organizations.
