Are you looking for a way to give back to your community and help keep Chautauqua Gorge State Forest clean? We are in need of volunteers to assist with picking up litter and trash from the Day Use Area and Camping Area at Chautauqua Gorge State Forest on Hannum Road.
Volunteers will also have the opportunity to report trail conditions in the area. When you sign up to volunteer with the Morgan Duke Conservation Society, you will be provided with supplies such as orange bags and trash pickers. Individuals of all ages, including students, are welcome to join us in our efforts to preserve this beautiful natural area.
As a volunteer, you will be required to fill out a DEC volunteer form, as you will be covered under state workers comp. These areas are especially popular with visitors on summer weekends, so your help is greatly appreciated, particularly on holiday weekends. With enough advance notice, the DEC may coordinate the removal of collected trash. Otherwise, it will be up to volunteers to ensure that the trash is disposed of properly.
If you have any questions or would like to sign up to volunteer, please reach out to James Sullivan at Jsullivan@morgandukecs.ngo. You can also sign up on our website by clicking on the button that says "Fill in An Application" on the right side of the page. Thank you for your help in keeping Chautauqua Gorge State Forest clean and beautiful for all to enjoy!

Mission Statement
The Morgan Duke Conservation Society operates as a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) environmental conservation organization. Our primary objective revolves around safeguarding, enriching, and upholding the integrity of natural resources and ecosystems situated within untamed woodlands and forest preserves. These areas currently confront an array of challenges, notably issues related to overcrowding that are pervasive across wild forests and forest preserves nationwide. Simultaneously, we are dedicated to establishing and nurturing wildlife habitats tailored to species reliant on nascent woodlands. Moreover, we are committed to rehabilitating vegetation that has suffered due to human intervention. This multifaceted mission is achieved through diligent research, impactful educational initiatives, and proactive stewardship agreements.
Description
James Sullivan, the President and Founder of the Morgan Duke Conservation Society, established the organization in response to a poignant experience he had while camping in a small, pristine recreational area within the southeastern region of the Adirondack Preserve in 2006, and on subsequent occasions. Witnessing numerous challenges plaguing this locale-ranging from litter accumulation to vegetation destruction caused by vehicular intrusion and vandalism-he felt compelled to take action. In 2013, James Sullivan formalized his commitment by establishing the Morgan Duke Conservation Society. Initially consisting of merely six volunteers, which included himself and his family, their efforts were concentrated on the aforementioned recreation area during the summer months of each year. During these camping excursions, they diligently collaborated with forest rangers, engaging in activiti es such as afforestation, litter removal, and restoration painting.
