Position: Old Victoria Site Clean-Up and Tour

Location: Rockland, MI


Maintaining a clean and well-preserved cultural landscape is an on-going task that requires continual monitoring and upkeep. As part of National Trails Day, the work will take place from 2:00 pm - 4:30 pm on June 1 st , 2024, at 25401 Victoria Dam Rd, Victoria, MI 49960 at Old Victoria. Volunteers will work on a 2/3-mile section of the Peter Wolfe chapter of the North Country Scenic Trail, as well as the site at Old Victoria itself.

The Log cabins built at the Victoria Mine in 1899 served as homes to waves of copper miners and their families. Today visitors to Old Victoria can explore four historically furnished homes and hear stories about the men, women and children who once lived there.

Park Interpretive Ranger Lynette Webber will give a guided hiking tour after the work for all interested.


Duties:

Use hand tools to cut and clear vegetation and plant growth around trail, buildings, and other historic landscapes.

Pick-up modern-day trash for disposal.

Spread gravel on select sections of trail to help limit the saturation of the ground and mitigate further erosion.

Preferred Skills, Knowledge, and Abilities

Ability to discern historic litter from modern-day trash.

Ability to use a variety of hand tools including, but not limited to hoop brushes, loppers, bow saws, and hand saws.

Ability to lift up to 35 pounds.

Ability to traverse rocky/ uneven terrain.


Physical Demands: Standing, walking, bending and may be required during outdoors on uneven services in a variety of weather conditions. Lifting of moderately heavy objects and using a variety of hand tools (shears, loppers, hand saws, etc.) may be necessary.

Minimum Age: 16 years

Minimum Time Requirement: 1-2 hours

Anticipated work schedule: Work schedule is flexible, 2-4 hours.

Work Environment: Most of work is outside where temperatures can vary widely, from the 60’s to 80’s in the summer to -15 in the winter. Volunteers should be prepared according to the weather report.
