Are you a certified yoga instructor interested in putting yoga within reach for people experiencing homelessness? Join our team & share your expertise!

Nativity House Shelter is looking for certified yoga instructors to teach beginner level yoga classes and/or chair yoga classes.

Class sizes would be relatively small and would benefit shelter guests who are actively experiencing homelessness as well as low-income apartment residents who have transitioned out of homelessness but would not be able to afford traditional yoga classes.

You have the freedom to build your own schedule. We have not offered classes since before Covid-19.

Nativity House Shelter (overnight shelter) is a 167-bed shelter for adult men and women. The front side the building (Nativity House Apartments) provides 50 units of permanent supportive housing for chronically homeless single adults with disabilities. We also have shelter guests who utilize our drop-in Day Center from 7 am to 4:30 pm.

What we're looking for:

  • Someone who is certified to teach yoga & help prevent injury
  • Someone who can offer safe instruction for people with physical disabilities or mobility challenges and offer modified poses to help people move as they are able
  • Someone who is comfortable working with community members experiencing homelessness
  • Someone who knows how to work with people who have behavioral health / mental health challenges
  • Friendly & Compassionate- Kindness & a good sense of humor go a long way at the shelter
  • Able to make people feel safe, seen & comfortable

The basics

  • All applicants must be at least 18 years old to volunteer at Nativity House Shelter
  • Applicants must pass a Washington State Patrol and NSOPW background check to serve Background checks are updated every 2 years and are processed at no cost to volunteers.
  • If you're new to the state of WA (less than 3 years of residency), please let us know so we can do a different type of background check (no cost to you)
  • The onboarding process involves reference checks & an orientation

Or contact meganed@ccsww.org to request a registration form. Forms can be sent via email, fax or mail.

Once registrations have been received, our volunteer coordinator processes a background check (done at no cost to volunteers) and contacts references by phone or email. Once "vetted", you’ll be invited to attend an orientation and can start scheduling shifts.

Covid-19 Safety

Masking requirements have been dropped as of March 2023 but mask are still available for volunteers who wish to wear them. We will not ask your vaccination status. Anyone presenting Covid-19 symptoms or generally not feeling well will need to stay home until they are well again.

Description

Volunteer Services provides low-income adults (anyone 18 years old or older) who have temporary or permanent functional disabilities, including those associated with aging. The people we serve can not afford to purchase the kinds of service we provide, do not qualify for assistance from other sources and do not have family or friends available to help them. Service is provided on an as-volunteers-are-available basis. There are never any fees for the services provided.
