ORGANIZATION: Children's Fairyland

Saturday 5/4-10:30am-2:30pm (6 volunteers)
Arts and crafts and noodle tasting support
Siapo: The Traditional Fabric of the Samoa Island. Siapo is a traditional textile made from mulberry tree bark.Today siapos are exchanged at ceremonies, weddings, and funerals. Smaller pieces are made for the tourist market.The textile patterns depicted aretypically of plant or animal motifs or other images from Samoan life. For the arts and crafts project, we will be using stamping and stencil tracing methods on crinkled brown paper to help young guests explore ways to make their own patterns.

During the 12:00-2:00 hour, two volunteers will be helping with our noodle tasting activity. This activity is scheduled immediately after the reading aloud of Noodles Please! We will hand out two kinds of Asian cold noodles in Dixie sampling cups: 1) sunbutter rice noodle and 2) Japanese soba. This activity is immediately after the reading aloud of Simone and is designed by the illustrator, Minnie Phan. Sunday 5/19 - 10:30 to 2:30 (4 volunteers) Play games from Taiwan and China - Volunteers will invite kids to play and share techniques on playing these games. Volunteers are most welcome to join in and play with guests. Please also help us ensure game pieces don't walk away with the guests. No experiences necessary, we will show you how to play during the orientation.

Saturday 5/24 - 10:30 to 2:30 (4 volunteers) Kite flying and arts and crafts support During this weekend, we will have two activities happening in the Teddy Bear Picnic Area. 1) Volunteers will help kids make Koinobori kites using paper craft materials. 2) Volunteers will support the kite flying activities. We will have Bali style kites as a self-serve activity. It's helpful to have volunteers who know how to fly a kite and can also help ensure kites don't walk away with guests. No experiences necessary, we will show you how to run these activities during the orientation.
