Remote Historic Records Transcriber - Virginia

Save to Favorites

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Have you ever wanted to work with tangible historic sources from the comfort of your own home? Help Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park transcribe scans of important archival documents. You will work closely with the park Historian to transcribe documents so that they can be used to assist in exhibits, online articles, and park programs.

These documents may include local court records telling stories about residents who lived at preserved properties, claims files by civilians who lost property during the Civil War, or firsthand accounts of soldiers who fought in the Shenandoah Valley. These documents hold important stories of civilians, free or enslaved Black communities, and common soldiers. By transcribing these files, you will help bring these stories back to life.

Cedar Creek and Belle Grove National Historical Park is located in Virginia’s Shenandoah Valley, adjacent to the historic towns of Middletown and Strasburg, and is within the counties of Frederick, Shenandoah, and Warren. The park consists of approximately 3,713 acres that includes prehistoric resources, ecologically important areas, evidence of valley settlement and early European history of the region, examples of plantation life and culture, and nationally significant Civil War resources.

Benefits to the volunteer:

  • Experience working with professional cultural resources staff and getting a behind the scenes look at records preservation.
  • Development of archival research and document transcription skills.
  • Development of ability to read cursive handwriting.
  • Volunteers can work at their own pace and engage with the project as much as their schedule allows.
