Who We Are

Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary is a 501(c)3 nonprofit dedicated to providing loving lifetime homes for rescued donkeys. We combat donkey mistreatment, abandonment, and misperceptions. We're excited to expand our capacity with our new sanctuary project in San Luis Obispo, CA.

Volunteer Opportunities

Our volunteers make a world of difference for our donkeys! Join us for meaningful work:

  • Donkey Care & Enrichment: Hands-on time with the donkeys - grooming, exercise, training, and lots of love!
  • Facilities Maintenance: Cleaning stalls, and pastures, and keeping the sanctuary tidy.

Important Requirements

  • Recent Equine Experience: Hands-on knowledge of donkeys or horses is essential for donkey and volunteer safety.
  • Age: Must be at least 18 years old.
  • Commitment: A minimum of 2 shifts a week for 3 months is ideal. If this isn't possible, please discuss alternative schedules with us. (Average shift is 2-4 hours.)
  • Physical Abilities: Must be comfortable working outdoors in varying weather, able to lift, rake, walk, clean hooves, and bathe donkeys.

We rescue and rehabilitate mistreated and abandoned donkeys, fight misconceptions about their nature, and provide them with safe and loving forever homes.


Rancho Burro Donkey Sanctuary is more than a rescue - it's a community dedicated to changing hearts and minds about donkeys. We rescue mistreated and homeless donkeys, offer sanctuary, and educate the public about the intelligence, loyalty, and gentle nature of these often misunderstood animals.

  • Driver's License Needed
  • Must be at least 18
  • Orientation or Training
  • Must be able to commit to at least two 1-2 three-four hour shifts weekly, for 3 months minimum. (Most of our volunteers stay longer than 3 months.)
  • Must have recent hands-on equine experience.
