What is Backyard Harvest?

Backyard Harvest is a newly implemented program by Food Finders that connects volunteers with local communities to harvest excess produce from backyards. Our mission is to reduce food waste and address food insecurity by redistributing fresh, locally grown produce to those in need. By channeling the abundance of home gardens, we strive to create a positive impact on both the environment and the well-being of our community members.

Volunteer Opportunities:

As a Backyard Harvest volunteer, your role will involve visiting designated local neighborhoods and assisting in the harvesting of surplus fruits and vegetables from residents' backyard gardens. This hands-on experience not only contributes to reducing food waste but also directly benefits local community organizations!

Key Responsibilities:

Volunteers that are interested in harvesting must have the ability to:

  • Lift/carry at least 25 lbs of weight
  • Ability to be outside/in the Sun for a period of time
  • Possibly be around animals as volunteers will be working at people’s homes
  • Be physically active as they will be picking fruits from trees using equipment

Each Backyard Harvest shift requires a 2 hour time commitment!

Mission Statement

To eliminate food waste while improving nutrition in food insecure communities.

Description

Our Food Rescue Program began in 1989 in response to the disparity between the amount of wholesome food going to waste and the amount of people facing food insecurity. Food Finders initially rescued a few thousand pounds of food per year with only the Founder and several volunteers running the program. Today, we have 17 full-time staff and 6 interns, and we have an army of more than 300 volunteers. We serve more than 400 recipient agency partners and engage more than 700 food donors. Our focus is on perishable and prepared food. This food is immediately delivered to our partner agencies, not warehoused, providing an average of 30,000-40,000 meals a day, 365 days a year. So far in 2023, we have rescued over 13.7 million pounds of food, and we have the possibility to reach a Food Finders all-time high of 16 million pounds of food by the end of the year.

In September, our Food 4 Kids program will start again with the Long Beach Unified School District. We will provide 1,844 meals per month to over 40 schools to ensure that students + their families who are struggling with food insecurity have meals to eat on the weekends.
