Join Food Finders in our mission to Stamp Out Hunger! Stamp Out Hunger is the largest food drive in the country and will take place on May 11, 2024 . This annual event is collaborative with Food Finders and helps to bring together volunteers, organizations, and community members to help combat food insecurity by collecting and distributing food donations to those that are in need. Stamp Out Hunger takes place in more than 10,000 cities and towns across the nation, including our local community here in Long Beach. This year, Food Finders will be at several local post office locations: Seal Beach Village (2929 Westminster Blvd, Seal Beach, CA 90740) North Long Beach Annex (5101 Long Beach Blvd, LB, CA 90805)8 Spring St Annex (6510 E Spring St, Long Beach, CA 90815) Lakewood Postal Office (5200 Clark Ave, Lakewood, CA 90174) As a volunteer, you will help to assemble meal boxes and ensure that nutritious meals will reach individuals and families facing food insecurity. Your efforts are crucial in addressing hunger in our community and Stamp Out Hunger provides an excellent opportunity for us to support their mission. We invite you to collaborate with us by participating to stamp out hunger with Food Finders on May 11th. This is an exciting and rewarding opportunity for you to get involved with and give back to the community. What is Backyard Harvest? Backyard Harvest is a newly implemented program by Food Finders that connects volunteers with local communities to harvest excess produce from backyards. Our mission is to reduce food waste and address food insecurity by redistributing fresh, locally grown produce to those in need. By channeling the abundance of home gardens, we strive to create a positive impact on both the environment and the well-being of our community members. Volunteer Opportunities: As a Backyard Harvest volunteer, your role will involve visiting designated local neighborhoods and assisting in the harvesting of surplus fruits and vegetables from residents' backyard gardens. This hands-on experience not only contributes to reducing food waste but also directly benefits local community organizations! Key Responsibilities: Volunteers that are interested in harvesting must have the ability to: Lift/carry at least 25 lbs of weight Ability to be outside/in the Sun for a period of time Possibly be around animals as volunteers will be working at people’s homes Be physically active as they will be picking fruits from trees using equipment Each Backyard Harvest shift requires a 2 hour time commitment!
