ORGANIZATION: San Diego Model Railroad Museum



As a docent at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum (SDMRM) you'll have the opportunity to learn and share historical details of Southern California railroads, specifically a temporary exhibit, as well as the complexities of creating model railroad layouts. Docents will be under the direction of the Chief Docent.

Volunteer Docents welcome guests and provide an overview of the Tijuana and Tecate Exhibit (T&T Exhibit). They also help maintain the exhibit during SDMRM's Summer Camp sessions. The Tijuana and Tecate Exhibit explores the construction and history of the San Diego and Arizona Eastern, specifically looking at the section located across the Mexican Border, known as the Tijuana and Tecate railroad.

Duties & Responsibilities:

Interact with guests visiting the museum and share background information including historical details and reasons for each model railroad layout

Provide scheduled and impromptu tours for guests and groups

Assist with special events and programs as museum representatives

Help clear the museum of guests at the end of the day

Understand safety policies and actively promote safe practices

Opportunity Requirements & Important Notes

Time Commitment: Volunteer Docents must train for 2 shifts then commit to a minimum of 2 shifts per week. Shifts take place Tuesday-Friday, from 12:30pm - 4:00pm and include breaks. The museum is currently open Tuesday - Sunday with potential to open additional days.

Onboarding Process: Application, interview, and training. Interviews will take place in early May and training in early June.

Required Skills/Experience: A curiosity to learn and communicate details about model trains with guests, positive attitude and team player, customer service skills with an interest in interacting with families and museum guests, and be reliable, dependable, responsible, trustworthy

Desired Skills/Experience: Ability to speak English and Spanish would be a huge bonus!

Physical Requirements: Ability to physically walk and stand the majority of each shift, bend, squat, and lift up to 15-20 pounds. SDMRM is happy to provide reasonable accommodations for individuals with physical limitations. The space where this project takes place is wheelchair accessible.

Note: This volunteer position does not run model trains.
