Volunteer Librarians welcome museum guests into the Erwin Welsch Research Library. They oversee inventorying donations, cataloging records, and helping digitize the museum’s archive. Librarians have the opportunity to learn and share information about the railroads, their history, and the trains that ran on them. Volunteers do not need to have experience with trains, model railroading, or libraries. Note: This position does not run model trains. Responsibilities · Greeting guests in the library · Helping guests locate specific resources · Keeping inventory of incoming donations · Sorting, filing, and shelfing materials according to the library’s classification system · Cataloging records · Participating in archival digitization · Selling overstock books · Assisting in keeping the library in a clean and orderly condition Skills: · Must be organized · Must be dependable and punctual · Should have basic computer skills (Microsoft Word, Excel, etc.) and experience with office equipment · Experience with Past Perfect and/or Photoshop Elements is a plus · Ability to work well and communicate with members of the public and fellow library staff · Ability to work independently and be self-motivated

The Polar Express is in town at the San Diego Model Railroad Museum! To celebrate the holiday season, on Saturday December 21st, the San Diego Model Railroad Museum will host a Polar Express Family Day Children are invited to wear their pj's and enjoy the Polar Express film (2 showings) and also make their way around the museum while participating in themed crafts, a scavenger hunt, and games based on the film! There will be a visit from Santa as well... once he hears the jingle bells! Volunteers will assist with the final event setup and breakdown. During the event, they will attend the craft tables, assist children/guests with crafts, and restock craft supplies. Volunteers will also be positioned around the museum to help with the scavenger hunt, games, and directing participants to different areas of the event. Attire: Casual attire with comfortable shoes. Feel free to wear your festive attire. Wearing loose or long sleeves is not recommended because they can be cumbersome while using the craft supplies

Help with the San Diego Model Railroad Museum's 9th Annual Ales N' Rails fundraiser. The event brings together local breweries and train-loving revelers for an evening of fun. Guests of the event will be encouraged to wear garishly goregous holiday sweaters, try a variety of beers, and watch trains traverse their exhibits while listening to music, courtesy of the Jason Hanna Jazz Band.

Position Summary Garden Railroad Volunteers oversee preparing and running the San Diego Model Railroad Museum’s garden layout including running trains and helping our guests enjoy the exhibit. This is a great opportunity for anyone with an interest in history, model trains or gardening and will be under the direction of Chief Docent. Responsibilities · Prepare display areas around the Garden Layout for opening and closing · Clean and maintain the wheels and tracks of the layout and the equipment in preparation for museum guests · Interact with guests and assist with interactive elements of the garden · Water and maintain centennial garden railway, plants and structures · Understand safety policies and actively promote safe practices Skills: · Must be dependable and punctual · Ability to work well and communicate with members of the public and fellow museum staff · Ability to work independently and be self-motivated Requirements · Must be 18+ years old · Ability to physically walk and climb stairs · Ability to bend, squat, and lift 15 to 20 pounds · No prior train knowledge necessary · Volunteers must train with the Chief Docent for at least five days before they are able to work on their own · We request that volunteers complete no less than two shifts per month · All shifts are from 10:00 AM - 3:30 PM, Tuesday through Saturday Benefits · Guest passes for our museum for every 15 hours of work completed · Guest passes to other museums in the park for every 25 hours of work completed · Opportunity to earn Volunteer of the Month recognition · Invitation to our annual Volunteer Appreciation Dinner and other private staff and member events · Work experience and references from staff including letters of recommendation · Discounts for the museum, including discounts to the museums ticketed events and at the museum giftshop
