Newcomer Youth Tutors in the NicerFL Newcomer Youth Program can tutor in-person at the center an individual newcomer youth or a small group. Tutors follow an individualized learning plan for each student and use interactive lessons, activities and educational games to develop the student’s English language and academic skills. Additionally, tutors monitor participants' progress, provide mentorship and guidance, and connect the newcomer family to the resources they need to help their child succeed in school. In the last 30 minutes of the 2-hour session, family members and their children participate in a joint project-based activity as part of our Family Literacy Project.

Requirements to become a NicerFL tutor: * commit to working with newcomers for a minimum of 4 months, for 2 or more hours a week. * attend an hour of orientation and complete an application and a background check. * complete a 2-hour in person training at the center and participate in ongoing professional development (around 2 hours a month) * if a student, provide 2 references from course instructors describing their academic skills in order to be selected for tutoring.

Reporting Responsibilities of NicerFL tutors:

-Complete an initial student interview and use date from the initial needs survey to complete an individual student profile and give referrals

-complete follow-up and re-assessment surveys every month and update the student profile

-connect with the student weekly to monitor progress and participation

-complete and timely submit the volunteer log and student progress reports
