ORGANIZATION: Northstar Tutoring

Northstar Students

For more than 30 years, Northstar Tutoring’s mission has been to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. We achieve this by matching students with their own volunteer tutor/mentor who helps them once a week to complete their homework, study for upcoming tests/quizzes, and/or work on supplemental education materials. Tutors are matched with their own individual student who they work with for the school year (and subsequent years if the tutor returns).

We have recently received a significant increase in student applications and are looking for tutors who are able to help the spring semester of the 2024-2025 school year (and longer if tutors are available!). Sessions are planned between the tutor and student/parent and can take place after school hours, evenings or weekends depending on the tutor's availability. Tutors typically work with their student once a week for 45-90 minutes, depending on the age of the student. The majority of our students have homework online each day so students are able to pull up their homework assignment on Zoom (or another platform), share their screen and walk through the assignment with the tutor. Northstar also has a variety of educational materials for instances when students don't have homework, or additional materials are needed.

A few additional facts:

  • We accept new students throughout the year so volunteers can sign up at any point and be matched with a new student. We usually ask that volunteers commit to the remainder of whatever school year they join in.
  • No previous teaching experience is required (approximately 90% of volunteers have never taught/tutored before).
  • We work with students in grades K-12 and volunteers can request a specific age range to be matched with.
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate.
