Memory Cafés are designed to lessen the feelings of social isolation for people living with dementia and their caregivers. Meeting twice a month for just a couple of hours, the commitment is not large, but the positive impact is huge!

As a volunteer, you would be a type of "party host," and tasks may include helping to set up the room to create an inviting atmosphere, welcoming attendees, distributing name tags and surveys, helping with activities (which could include arts and crafts, music, bingo, games, and much more) and socializing with guests to make them feel welcome. Volunteers are NOT expected to help guests with any personal care tasks, and staff and caregivers will always be present so volunteers would not be left alone to deal with any emergencies.

If you are kind, friendly, positive, patient, accepting, and believe in treating all people with dignity and respect, this is a great volunteer opportunity for you! After completing an application packet, background check, and getting a fingerprint clearance card (paid for by PCOA), you will receive a 1.5 hour training on Dementia Friends and memory cafes, including an overview of dementia, memory cafes, and communication tips, so no prior knowledge or training is required - only a desire to help and have fun.
If you are interested, please contact Christina Walker at cwalker@pcoa.org or (520) 258-5062.
