The Caribou - Targhee National Forest is seeking an individual or couple to host the Scout Mountain Campground, located just 13 miles South from Pocatello, Idaho. The site is in a shaded forest with great views of Scout Mountain and a nearby stream. The site is part of the Mink Creek recreational area and has access to many recreational opportunities such as many multi-use trails for biking, hiking and motorized use, bird watching and horseback riding. A self-guided nature trail is conveniently located for visitors to use.
Scout Mountain Campground hosts 32 Single Sites, 2 Double Sites, 1 Triple Site, and 1 Group Site. Hosts will be responsible for interacting with the visiting public, providing information about rules and regulations, camp cleanup and general maintenance.
A self-contained RV or travel trailer will be required from the host. The host site includes sewer hookup, potable water, storage shed, picnic table and a fire ring. Host will need to provide their own power source, if desired, as well as a vehicle that can travel on a paved road and be used to conduct campground maintenance. Hosts will recieve reimbursement for incidental expenses of $22/day and for official mileage at the rate of 0.67 per mile directly related to campground maintenance.
Training will be provided to complete tasks to Forest Service maintenance and safety standards. A USFS Volunteer uniform, tools, and campground supplies will be provided.
Requirements
• Pass a background check and possess a valid state driver’s license.
• Volunteer a minimum of 4-6 hours a day/20-30 hours weekly and be available other times for public interactions.
• Hosts will be expected to work weekends and on holidays.
• Volunteers need to be able to conduct light physical work in an outdoor setting such as cleaning campsites and bathrooms, replacing signs, pushing wheelbarrows/wagons and doing light vegetation management.
Preferred Candidates:
• Outgoing personality with strong verbal communication skills to make daily public contacts
• Maintain daily written logs.
• Ability to interact with diverse visitors with a positive attitude informing them of rules and regulations.
Campground host volunteer positions are accepted as long as positions are vacant. Additional applications will be retained for a waitlist, in case we have an unexpected vacancy for one of the host locations.
