ORGANIZATION: NOTRE DAME MISSION VOLUNTEERS AMERICORPS

This position is a part of the Notre Dame - AmeriCorps program. NDA members strive to empower the economically disadvantaged through education and personal hands-on support. They offer small group and one-on-one instruction to children and adults (literacy, GED, and ESL), organize after-school enrichment activities, model and teach conflict resolution, and involve community professionals in the learning process.

Members commit to at least 1700 hours of service over 11 months (August 2024 to June 2025).

The NDA member for this position would serve with Boys Hope Girls Hope Baltimore. We are looking for a Youth Mentor to join our team to help academically capable and motivated children in need to meet their full potential and become men and women for others by providing value-centered, family like homes, and opportunities through college.

A minimum of 2 years college is preferred or a minimum of 5 years experience working with adolescents. The ideal candidate must possess strong written and oral communication skills, organizational skills and the ability to work both independently and within a team. MUST have a current driver's license with a good driving record of at least 3 years. CPR/First Aid certification is preferred. All candidates are required to complete and pass a physical/drug screening, criminal, and motor vehicle background check.

I. General Description:

Working as part of the BHGH team, the Youth Mentor (YM) will be responsible for helping to create a home environment conducive to nurturing the overall wellness of the Scholars. The YM will manage the day-to-day operations of one of the two BHGH homes, with up to 8 Scholars in each home.

Duties include:

  • Creating or following a schedule to ensure that all Scholars are able to attend to their academic and extracurricular activities
  • Homework assistance and/or tutoring
  • Role modeling social skills and teaching daily living skills
  • Coordinates communication with Scholars’ families
  • Responsible for identifying safety issues related to the home and reporting those issues to the Program Director and/or House Manager
  • Transporting Scholars to and from school
  • Meal planning, including co-creating a weekly menu, food shopping and meal preparation
  • Creating or following a chore list for the Scholars and performing light housekeeping duties
  • Reporting to the Program Director or House Manager daily
  • Monitoring Scholars and highlighting any concerns that need to be addressed in regards to their emotional and physical health
  • Helps to plan weekend enrichment activities
  • Takes on-call overnight shifts as scheduled which entails sleeping on-site and being available in case of emergency

II. Working Conditions:

This position is a full-time, LIVE-IN position, room and board are included. A private living suite is provided for the Youth Mentor. The work schedule will vary depending upon the Scholars activities and will include some evenings and some weekends. Must be available to transport Scholars to and from school, as well as other activities, using the company vehicle.
