Background

THE HEARTS THE CARES is a community based Organization duly registered by Mityana District Local Government under Reg. No. TTA.DIV/420/2023. It focuses among other things; on providing holistic nursing health care /treatment to the abandoned needy and vulnerable patients (such as children on pediatrics ward, expecting mothers on maternity ward, females on ward and males on ward) admitted in government owned health care facilities of Mityana District with major emphasis given to Mityana General Hospital, the districts’ highest health care service facility.

History about The Hearts That Care

The journey for The Hearts that Care began in 2022, when its founder a Public servant was transferred to Mityana General Hospital to perform the duties of the Senior Hospital Administrator. Through the Hospital Social Worker, the founder was Shocked by the overwhelming un matched response of the Hospital Administration to the health demands of abandoned, needy admitted patients who constantly flock into the hospital in need for health care services. Using part of his salary and with support of other well-wishers the abandoned and needy admitted could get some drugs and medical supplies in the event that the government drugs and medical supplies were out of stock! In some cases he gives in his saloon car to transport some of these patients for specialized treatment at Mulago; this whole idea of Caring for those in dire need of health/medical care evolved into The Hearts That Care which is continuing to expand its impact, working towards a situation where abandoned and needy admitted patients receive the required adequate health care in government health facilities

At Mityana General Hospital, the government provides human resource in the different departments of the hospital, equipment / infrastructure at Causality, OPD, Dental, Theatre, Wards, stores /pharmacy, Laboratory, drugs and other medical supplies (but drugs and medical supplies rarely last a cycle of two months) ; it does not provide food to its patients; admitted patients with care givers or attendants are ok. It’s worse for the abandoned and admitted patients be it children, mothers, female or male.

Identification of abandoned vulnerable and needy patients/mothers

At the hospital, these patients are identified and confirmed by the in charges at Casuality /emergency section, at Out Patient Department (OPD), Maternity ward and Theatre. Others are identified by local leaders in the community and good Samaritans

Our Appeal

In real terms, to care for the abandoned vulnerable and needy admitted patients at Mityana General Hospital needs every one’s support despite how small one may view his or contribution. That support matters. While they are on admission in the Hospital. Whoever reading this post, please kindly find some space in you and stand with this cohort of patients. They deserve better.

You can choose to support us on any of the following areas either directly, as a family, group or run a campaign and raise funds and or items needed for the betterment of these patients or recommend us for support. You can also plan to visit us if possible.

In the meantime, however, we need to have some very basic items that are necessary to help them well. Some of These basic items include;

  1. Physical Items (these items below and they can take us for about a 6 months to a year)
    blackets -10pcs, bed sheets -20pairs, basins- 10 pcs, buckets -10pcs , flasks for tea and food 5pcs for each, plates -10, patient food trays - 10pcs, soap to wash bed sheets and their clothes - 3 boxes, Liquid soap 3 Jeri cans, Jik - 1box, mosquito nets- 10pcs, scrabs for 10patients, iron box- 3pcs, changing clothes 10 of them, cupboard - general Vaseline -1box, Bathing soap -3boxes, Scrabs for patients, trolley and Caregivers, and any other item you feel that will be of help to care for these patients. Once we get these items, The Hearts That Care will keep well these items well so that they can use on other similar patients. We wlcome volunteers to donate these items

  1. Patients Welfare while at the ward -

Like it is for patients who are cared for by their relatives at the ward, even abandoned, vulnerable and needy admitted patients need; Care takers, Food, drinking water, tea leaves, coffee, Sugar, energy drinks, juice; to support the abandoned patients welfare please contact us directly.

  1. Emergency Ambulance services and Fuel fund

More often than not we have cases of abandoned admitted patients that need to be evacuated from Mityana Hospital for specialized treatment; because as a General Hospital there are certain health complications that are not handled at the facility. The Hearts That Care needs to pool and have 24/7 emergency fuel fund and a dedicated Ambulance to support transportation critical & emergency cases for specialized treatment at Mulago or Butabika Hospitals. To Stand with Us, please contact us on email or Whats app. With the availability of Fuel fund, even without an ambulance it’s easy to improvise for another vehicle to save lives.

  1. Provision of medical drugs and supplies to abandoned and needy admitted patients

The government supplies drugs and medical supplies to the Hospital once every two months; but due to the big number of patients handled by the Hospital; drugs and supplies get used up within 30 days! Drug stock out period can last for about three (3) months! During the stock out period the abandoned, vulnerable and needy admitted patients suffer most, because they have nowhere to run to, yet they need medication. We appeal to all able persons, good Samaritans to bridge this gap by providing this section of patients with the required drugs and medical supplies. Determining the kind of drugs and supplies needed will be established at the ward and confirmed by ward in charges Stand with Us and together will save innocent lives. For details please contact us
