Volunteers English Language tutors are needed to work with new arrivals on their basic English language and literacy skills. We have opportunities to work in-person with adults on weekdays during the day. We also need tutors who will meet online using Zoom, WhatsApp, Google Meets at various times on weekdays and weekends to accommodate student schedules. We serve refugees, asylees and immigrants from around the globe including Ukraine, Afghanistan, Venezuela, Myanmar, Syria, Haiti, Congo and numerous African and Central and South American countries. Bilingual skills are not necessary. Free training is provided.
Program requirements:
- Commit to 2 hours a week for 6 months or more.
- Attend a virtual Heartland new volunteer orientation on Zoom.
- Complete a free, 12-hour pre-service Tutor Essentials tutor training through Literacy Works. This training will provide you with the tools to be a successful English tutor.
- Attend ongoing volunteer training at least twice a year.
- Become a mandated reporter through the Illinois Department of Child and Family Services (DCFS).
- Must live or work in Illinois.
- Be willing to submit to a background check.

Description
Refugee & Immigrant Community Services (RICS) partners with refugees, asylees, immigrants and survivors of trafficking to address their needs by connecting them to their new community, providing education and employment services, and the help they need to succeed in their new country. RICS annually resettles more than 150 individuals in Chicago from places like Afghanistan, Burma, Democratic Republic of Congo, Eritrea, Ethiopia, Iraq, Sudan, Ukraine, and Syria. RICS serves an additional 500 refugees through a variety of services including cultural orientation, adjustment counseling, employment, job readiness and placement services, as well as medical case management, family literacy, and English language training for adults.
