ABOUT NGA
Newington Green Alliance (NGA) is a small charity working to build strong, deeply connected community that reduces suspicion and mistrust, crime and loneliness and improves mental health, happiness, educational success, community financial strength, and mutual support.
PROJECT
One of the means NGA will be using more to bring people together is to convene and facilitate local conferences on issues relevant to the community and its members. Conference topics we are considering for the future include:
- Loneliness
- Integration
- Classism
- Public space use/design
- Housing
- Displacement
- White working class
- African-Caribbean focus
- Gentrification
- Our common goals
- Values
Role
As an NGA conference team member, you will play a large role in creating local conferences. The team overall will carry out a variety of functions including:
- Planning and designing the structure of conferences
- Seeking community ideas for conferences
- Selecting conference topics
- Working the the Digital Marketing and Website teams to create effective event promotion
- Work with the Fundraising Team to secure greater funding for local conferences
- Seek out and develop partnerships with local organisations and other groups
- Select and organise conference venues
- Manage and facilitate conference agendas and dynamics
Volunteers must be prepared to commit to at least six months of working with NGA. Time required will vary depending on the specific responsibilities of each volunteer and the time relative to a conference. On average, we estimate that each volunteer will need to devote 2-3 hours per week to the work of the Conference Team.
Skills
Skills required for all Conference Team members:
- Organisational skills
- Good planner
- Flexible about changes in plan and setbacks
- Able to work work well with a variety of people of different skills and perspectives
Within the team, the following skills are needed, although not all team members are expected to have each skill:
- Experience with planning and managing conferences or similar events.
- Familiarity with social, financial, and similar issues in the Hackney and Islington areas
- Comfortable with contacting and building relationships with groups and organisations
- Persuasive writing skills
- Understanding of community sociology
- Good research skills
- Interviewing skills
- Videography and editing
- Report writing

NGA became a UK registered charity (1190473) in July 2020. We are an all-volunteer organisation with over 100 volunteers and a wide range or projects geared toward building connection and relationship across all the many differences in the Newington Green area of London.
