Job Title: Neighbor Advocate

Our Mission: To foster the health and wellness of medically vulnerable neighbors facing food insecurity through the delivery of groceries and household supplies and through offering social support; and to engage the community in the work of justice through education, shared resources, and building just relationships.

Purpose: Neighbor Advocates help us carry out our mission by connecting directly with Neighbors to facilitate their access to healthy, affordable food and household supplies, thereby increasing household food security while extending the dignity of choice. Neighbor Advocates also make connections across the many boundary lines that often divide us, making our community stronger.

Location and Technology Needs: Neighbor Advocates can work from any location. They talk to Neighbors on the phone to take their grocery order and place the order in the online Kroger Pickup system using the Bringing Justice Home account. They will need internet access, a phone, and the skills necessary to place online orders.

Key Responsibilities:

  • Build rapport with Neighbors with active listening, empathy, and relationship building skills
  • Communicate by phone with Neighbors to place their monthly grocery order
  • Work with the Neighbor to ensure their order is within budget.
  • Encourage Neighbors to shop for items that prioritize health, wellness, and dignity of choice.
  • Provide cooking and recipe ideas as needed or upon Neighbor request.
  • Keep all Neighbor identifying information confidential, except you may bring any voiced or observed needs or concerns back to Bringing Justice Home’s Executive Director for review.
  • Securely maintain BJH Kroger login information and account, which includes debit and credit cards on file.
  • Make referrals to community resources using list of provided resources
  • Assign grocery pickup order to Grocery Bringer volunteer based on provided availability
  • Communicate details about order to assigned Grocery Brnger
  • Save order details in designated Google Drive space

Reports to : Executive Director

Length of Appointment : We hope you’ll be a part of our neighborhood forever! But we do ask you to commit to a 90-day period of service once you’re onboarded with us.

Time Commitment: At least one 4-hour shift per week at a set regular time so that Neighbors know when to call.

Qualifications :

  • Willingness to serve without judgment those who may seem to be unlike ourselves
  • Compassion for helping those who are facing food insecurity due to unemployment, age, illness, disability, and other reasons.
  • Ability to use active listening skills to communicate and build relationships with our neighbors.
  • Access to phone, computer, and internet.
  • Ability to use email, texting, and/or phone calls for communication with neighbors and Executive Director.
  • Ability to commit to a 90-day trial period of service of approximately one 4-hour shift per week, Monday-Saturday.
  • Maintain confidentiality outside of Bringing Justice Home (you may share stories but not names, addresses, or other specifics).

Training:

Training will consist of a phone or video meeting to review details of the position. This will include a review of our non-discrimination policy, mission and vision, as well as job duties. There will also be a series of online modules to complete.

Age Requirement:

  • 18 and older.

Screening :

  • Reference check
    • Provide names and contact information for two references
  • Background check
    • All adults 18 and up will complete a background check, initiated by Bringing Justice Home.
