We’re looking for volunteer Site Coordinators to lead our programs at various sites around the state. Our programs are on hiatus during the summer (programs typically run from mid-October through mid-May) so we aren't currently placing volunteers. But we would love for you to complete an application and begin volunteering as a Site Coordinator in the fall of 2024.

To learn more about this special role, go to https://smartreading.org/volunteer/

Specifically, SMART Reading is recruiting Site Coordinators -- leadership volunteers who are vital to the success of the organization’s programs. From October through May, Site Coordinators provide program oversight during reading sessions, act as a key point of contact at SMART schools, and create a welcoming, organized environment for volunteer Readers and students. SMART simply cannot open programs and do their work without them.

The Site Coordinator role is an incredible opportunity to make a direct difference in the lives of both adult volunteers and students when they need the support more than ever.

About SMART Reading

Location:

101 SW MARKET ST, PORTLAND, OR 97201, US

Mission Statement

Our vision is an Oregon where all children can realize their full potential through reading. We provide a meaningful way for the community to support kids through shared reading time and access to books. Our mission is to spark joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book.

Description

The intention of SMART Reading is to positively impact literacy outcomes by providing early reading support, access to books, and community engagement in an equitable and inclusive environment for everyone involved.

The program concept is simple: pair an adult volunteer with children for shared reading sessions and provide children with books to keep. Volunteers model the joy of reading while supporting the child’s efforts to read independently.

SMART Reading offers two main delivery models to accommodate different educational needs and environments: One-to-One SMART, which pairs a student and a volunteer to read together, and Classroom SMART, which brings in a special guest volunteer to read to the entire classroom on a regular basis.

In July 2022, the Children’s Book Bank merged with SMART Reading. The Children’s Book Bank at SMART Reading is located in Northeast Portland. We accept new and gently used book donations from the community, then organize volunteers to sort, clean, and distribute books. In addition, we purchase supplemental books with diverse representation to better meet the needs of the children and families we serve.
