We’re looking for volunteer Site Coordinators to lead our programs at various sites around the state. Our programs are on hiatus during the summer (programs typically run from mid-October through mid-May) so we aren't currently placing volunteers. But we would love for you to complete an application and begin volunteering as a Site Coordinator in the fall of 2024. To learn more about this special role, go to https://smartreading.org/volunteer/ Specifically, SMART Reading is recruiting Site Coordinators -- leadership volunteers who are vital to the success of the organization’s programs. From October through May, Site Coordinators provide program oversight during reading sessions, act as a key point of contact at SMART schools, and create a welcoming, organized environment for volunteer Readers and students. SMART simply cannot open programs and do their work without them. The Site Coordinator role is an incredible opportunity to make a direct difference in the lives of both adult volunteers and students when they need the support more than ever. Volunteering with SMART Reading Site Coordinator: 2-8 Hours/Week Site Coordinators are our leadership volunteers and act as a liaison between SMART and our site partners. This critical role trains volunteer Readers, implements virtual or in-person programming, and oversees the program at their assigned site throughout the year. We're looking for volunteer readers to read with kids at various sites around the state! This volunteer position is vital to SMART Reading, providing critical literacy support to kids and helping foster a love of reading and learning. Most SMART Reading programs operate during the school day from October to May, and the reading days and times vary depending on the individual site. This volunteer role may include participating in One-to-One SMART or Classroom SMART (in-person, with potentially some minimal opportunities for virtual) depending on availability and the needs of your local area or site. Since our programs are on hiatus during the summer we aren't currently placing volunteers. However, we would love for you to complete an application and begin volunteering in the fall of 2024. In our original shared reading model, One-to-One SMART, a trained volunteer is paired with a student for weekly, in-person child-guided reading sessions that last between 15 and 30 minutes. Every week for seven months, volunteers model the joy of reading and/or support the child’s efforts to read independently. Students also choose two books per month to keep and read with their families. Classroom SMART is a new shared reading model developed during the COVID-19 pandemic that pairs a volunteer with a classroom of students for regular interactive group read-alouds, either virtually or in person. These reading sessions with a "special guest" volunteer are designed to build excitement and enthusiasm for reading. Students in participating classrooms also choose two books per month to keep and read with their families. Volunteering with SMART Reading Reader: 1-2 Hours/Week The volunteer Reader position is integral to the success of SMART Reading. Readers typically commit to one to two hours per week either reading with a student one-on-one or leading a classroom read-aloud. The goal of the reading session is for students to have a fun, engaging experience with books and reading. If you would like more information about our program, please visit our website at https://smartreading.org/ If you would like to sign up to be a Volunteer Reader or Site Coordinator with us, please complete our application at the following link: https://smartreading.org/volunteer/ For more information about our local offices, including information about what sites are in your area, please visit https://smartreading.org/about-smart/local-offices/ The address listed on this site is for our SMART office in Portland. Mission Statement
Our vision is an Oregon where all children can realize their full potential through reading. We provide a meaningful way for the community to support kids through shared reading time and access to books. Our mission is to spark joy and opportunity through the magic of a shared book.
Description
The intention of SMART Reading is to positively impact literacy outcomes by providing early reading support, access to books, and community engagement in an equitable and inclusive environment for everyone involved. The program concept is simple: pair an adult volunteer with children for shared reading sessions and provide children with books to keep. Volunteers model the joy of reading while supporting the child’s efforts to read independently. SMART Reading offers two main delivery models to accommodate different educational needs and environments: One-to-One SMART, which pairs a student and a volunteer to read together, and Classroom SMART, which brings in a special guest volunteer to read to the entire classroom on a regular basis.
In July 2022, the Children’s Book Bank merged with SMART Reading. The Children’s Book Bank at SMART Reading is located in Northeast Portland. We accept new and gently used book donations from the community, then organize volunteers to sort, clean, and distribute books. In addition, we purchase supplemental books with diverse representation to better meet the needs of the children and families we serve.
