Organization Description:

Defense of Democracy is a nonpartisan group advocating for an inclusive public education system.

Mission Statement:

We advocate for legislators, educators, and administrators who will work to maintain communities as well as a public education system that supports and enhances our shared experiences regardless of religious beliefs, cultural background, or sexual orientation across the United States.

Defense of Democracy is seeking a dedicated and experienced individual to join our Board Development Committee as a committee member. As a leading nonprofit organization in our field, we are committed to making a positive impact in our community and advancing our mission. The Board Development Committee plays a crucial role in supporting the growth and effectiveness of our board members. This is an excellent opportunity for someone passionate about nonprofit governance and marketing to contribute their expertise to our organization.

RESPONSIBILITIES:

  • Collaborate with the Board Development Committee Chair and other committee members to develop and implement strategies and initiatives.
  • Assist with the tracking, hiring and onboarding process for committee and key board members.
  • Support the development of the board and planning for annual retreat.
  • Collaborate with other committees and staff members to align efforts with overall organizational strategies.
  • Attend committee meetings, actively participate in discussions, and contribute to the decision-making process.
  • Support board member recruitment and engagement efforts by VolunteerMatch and strategies to attract potential candidates.
  • Act as a brand ambassador for the organization and represent its values and mission in all marketing activities.
  • Maintain a positive and collaborative working relationship with fellow committee members, staff, and board members.

Required Qualifications:

  • 3+ years of experience in board development, governance, communications, or related fields, preferably in the nonprofit sector.
  • Knowledge of nonprofit governance and board development practices.
  • Excellent communication skills, both written and verbal.
  • Ability to think creatively and develop innovative solutions.
  • Strong organizational and project management skills.
  • Collaborative and team-oriented approach.
  • Commitment to the organization's mission and values.
