We need animal lovers like you to help us in our mission to safeguard, rescue, heal, adopt and advocate for animals while inspiring community action and compassion. At BARCS, volunteers are more than just a tremendous help to our mission--they are our lifeline and our family. Our volunteers help us care for the animals and operate our programs in a variety of different areas.
Our Resource department at BARCS serves community members in need. The resource team receives stray animals found by the public, animals being surrendered by their owners, and animals coming to BARCS for medical procedures or surgeries. They help pet owners who are looking for their lost pets and operate our pet food pantry. The resource department works closely with our Keeping Pets with Families team which helps pet owners who are experiencing temporary crises (such as homelessness, eviction, medical emergencies, incarceration, and more.) All in all, our resource team is constantly supporting community members in very emotional moments.
We need volunteer help to greet new arrivals to the resource lobby, help communicate wait times, manage the flow of humans and animals, and, in general, help treat everyone with respect and dignity, no matter the circumstances. It's a very special role, but allows volunteers to help with some of our biggest success stories and support Baltimore's pet owners in a very direct way.

Mission Statement
The Baltimore Animal Rescue and Care Shelter, Inc. (BARCS) is a nonprofit shelter that accepts and cares for all animals in need and promotes responsible pet ownership for a more humane community in Baltimore City. We are an open admission shelter that grants refuge to more than 10,000 animals a year regardless of age, health or history of abuse and neglect.
Description
BARCS is a non-profit, 501(c)3 organization operating Maryland’s largest animal shelter and pet adoption center. We are an open admission shelter, granting refuge to every abandoned, neglected, abused, lost or surrendered animal that comes through our door. A staggering 30 or more animals are surrendered to BARCS every day. No matter what the circumstance, we do not turn away any animal in need of shelter, food, medical care and a loving touch. Yearly, this equates to more than 10,000 dogs, cats, kittens, puppies, and even wildlife and exotic animals that need care and placement.
Each year, BARCS is growing, evolving and working to implement new innovative programs that benefit animals in need and the neighborhoods that support them.
