Hospice of the West was founded in 2010 with the mission to provide quality of life at the end of life. No request is too small, and no health need is too large for our specialized staff. Hospice of the West proudly serves Maricopa County, Arizona. Hospice of the West is looking for certified pet therapy volunteers. You will have the opportunity to create a true impact with individuals who are underneath our care.

To ensure we continue to do what is right for the patient and community, Hospice of the West requires a drug and background screening and recent TB test. Furthermore, Hospice of the West will require all volunteers to complete onboarding modules.

This opportunity will support patients all over Maricopa County. Please read the qualifications below.

Pet teams (owner and pet) must qualify for participation through one of the following options.

1. Be currently certified with one of the following pet therapy organizations. Must maintain certification with the organization.
  • Pet Partners - https://petpartners.org/ - Any pet certified by this organization may participate.
  • Alliance of Therapy Dogs - https://www.therapydogs.com/
  • Therapy Dogs International - http://www.tdi-dog.org/
2. Complete the following PetSmart programs.
  • Pass AKC Canine Good Citizen Test from PetSmart (provide copy of certificate); Cost - $20 if passed
  • After passing AKC CGC Test, successfully complete Therapy Dog Training class offered by PetSmart. A 1-hour class per week for six weeks (provide copy of certificate of completion); Cost - $129
  • Must complete CGC annually.
We also need to have on file your pet's current shot records (rabies and DHP, or comparable).

There are many different types of volunteers and many ways to get involved. Below is a list of volunteer types:

Arts and crafts
Play therapy (games)
