Located along the beautiful Cumberland Mountains, Cumberland Gap National Historical Park stretches across three states: Kentucky, Tennessee and Virginia. With over 85 miles of hiking trails, historical sites, overlooks, camping, and guided tours, Cumberland Gap provides opportunities for visitors of all ages and abilities.
Visitor Services Assistants serve as front-line representatives of the park, helping park rangers with front desk duties and other visitor center operations.
Main Duties
· Assist with visitor center opening/closing procedures.
· Welcome visitors as they enter the visitor center.
· Take reservations for tours, backcountry campsites, and picnic shelters both in-person and over the phone.
· Give directions to trailheads, parking areas, historic sites, landmarks, and other features using provided maps.
· Occasionally assist staff with interpretive programs and exhibits.
· Other duties as needed.
Qualifications
As a Visitor Services Assistant, you must be willing/able to do the following:
· Stand/sit in one location for extended periods of time.
· Read, understand, and interpret park maps to give directions to visitors.
· Arrive ON TIME at the proper location for volunteer duties, as agreed upon ahead of time by the Volunteer Coordinator(s).
· Respect the park’s equipment and to use it properly, as demonstrated during training/orientation.
· Wear the official volunteer uniform t-shirt (provided by the park), as well as closed-toe, closed-heel shoes during volunteer duties.
· Behave in a professional, courteous, and safe manner while representing the National Park Service, especially when in the presence of park visitors.
Please note: Government housing/RV pads are NOT available for this position.
