Role of Tutor

Our tutors have the unique opportunity to provide one-on-one after-school tutoring services to under-resourced elementary school aged children in the Manahawkin/Barnegat area. Research shows that one of the most important factors in changing the course of the lives of at-risk children is their connection with caring adults. Our tutors have the opportunity to provide a consistent, caring presence in the lives of needful children's in our community.

Duties include:

* Check student portal to find assignments and missed work
* Post goals and progress on the organization's HUB or in journal
* Contact school liaison with question or concerns (initial contact)
* Contact teacher with questions or concerns, if permission is previously given

Time requirements:

Typically, our after-school hour tutoring sessions take place 2 days a week at our Manahawkin location. Each session is 1.5 to 2 hours long, depending on the individual child's needs. Accordingly, volunteer tutors are asked to make a time commitment of 3 - 4 hours a week, starting at 3 PM.

All of our volunteers have the option to assist with other activities and services Hearts of Mercy provides to children and families, and/or the administrative functions of the organization. In fact, our new summer camp program was launched in 2022, and we will be seeking help with the children for this summer session, as well.

All of your skills and talents are welcome!

Mission Statement

Hearts of Mercy's mission is to break the poverty cycle through learning and enrichment programs that motivate at-risk children to create a better tomorrow.

Description

My name is Kristin and I am the Founder and CEO of Hearts of Mercy. We are located in Manahawkin NJ. Since 2009, we have been very active in our community in building relationships with families in low-income areas of the community, focusing on the children. We were awarded our 501(c)(3) status in 2015 and proudly continue to serve as part of the network of community's nonprofit, charitable organizations.

Hearts of Mercy offers free after-school tutoring, mentoring, "reading buddies," and sponsors many children in sports and other enriching activities throughout the year. These include extracurricular activities, such as dance, gymnastics, school bands, recreation, and private lessons if the opportunity arises. As part of our growth, we have added arts to our program activities, and are seek to join forces with many other local organizations in the art field! We also have a keen interest in collaborating with other youth-serving agencies to help fill gaps, eliminate barriers, and together advance the best outcomes for our community's children. We are continuing to open opportunities for these children and stand as their advocates. We strive to transform their mindset and realize who they CAN become!

I would like to learn more about ways we, Hearts of Mercy, can partner with you to close the gaps that research shows create barriers to success and adult independence among the under-resourced children we embrace, and to change the trajectory of their lives.
