This stipend eligible position is for the 2022-2023 school year. Includes a $3000 stipend ($1500 each term); half paid at mid-point of & remainder paid end of term. The Arc Minnesota’s State & Federal Policy Intern supports public policy program staff and others to advance work plan in legislative advocacy, self-advocacy, civic engagement, and public policy communication and education. Specific duties may include:



Responsibilities:

  • ·Support issue-specific research & data collection in state and federal policy related matters
  • Assist with federal and state bill tracking and monitoring
  • Support & assist with researching and drafting public comments on issues impacting the disability community at state and federal levels
  • Build & strengthen relationships with Minnesota’s congressional delegation & staff members
  • Build and strengthen relationships with The Arc U.S. policy staff and support organization’s meaningful engagement in federal policy efforts
  • Partner with policy team and interns to coordinate and attend in-district events, meetings, and home visits with federal level decision makers
  • Coordinate federal legislative engagement efforts with; evaluate opportunities and impact
  • Educate federal policymakers and staff about The Arc Minnesota’s mission, legislative agenda and public policy priorities
  • Attend committee hearings, news conferences, and disability advocacy meetings/events
  • Learn and track legislation in Health & Human Services, special education and other areas
  • Develop & update content for Public Policy Updates, social media (The Arc Minnesota Facebook & Twitter pages, Disability Policy Networking page) & general public policy website
  • Other duties as requested

  • Learn and incorporate The Arc’s core values of Human & Civil Rights, Self-Advocacy & Self-Direction, Equity & Belonging and Disability and Racial Justice


Qualifications:
  • Experience with and working on political campaigns and/or with elected officials
  • Effective communication and interpersonal skills; comfortable making phone calls
  • Will work with and have respect for people of all backgrounds; in teams and independently
  • Can work efficiently and effectively in a fast-paced and ever-changing environment
  • Effective organization skills; attention to detail/accuracy a must
  • Professional manner, dependable and can keep information confidential
  • Effective time management and problem solving skills; proficient computer skills
  • Awareness of issues impacting Minnesotans with disabilities & personal experience preferred
  • Experience in self-advocacy committee and/or Partners in Policymaking preferred
  • Commitment to social, racial, disability and LGBTQ+ justice and their intersections
  • Multiple language capabilities preferred but not required
  • Preference for individuals with a disability and/or lived experience around race and disability justice


Time Commitment:
  • 10-14 hours per week September 2023 - May 2024. Hours are Monday-Friday 8:30am-5:00pm with evenings and weekends as schedule allows/if needed
