Led by a diverse team, the Sentinel has already attracted world-class writers and editors. Initial sections will focus on mental health, career development, education, lifestyle and health, relationships, politics, and fiction, plus a once-weekly feature on people doing good in the world.

The DG Sentinel will be heavily supported by Dweebs Global, a successful free mentorship nonprofit operating in over 35 countries, with on-the-ground teams in Sierra Leone, Nigeria, India, Colombia, and the United States.

Role Profile

We are looking for experienced, skilled and passionate individuals to join our operations team with the DG Sentinel.

This role will report directly to the COO and work closely with the Operational Leadership team.

DG Sentinel is looking for their first Director of Community to support in the development of our leadership program, improve collaboration between our volunteers and support in the overall strategy.

This role will not be expected to design or implement the strategies but to support and ensure the resources are present. The primary focus will be our leaders; from Chief’s to Directors and Heads of, ensure a consistent message is delivered and volunteer engagement policies become part of our everyday work.

Activities include;

  • Providing 1:1 and group leadership coaching sessions
  • Contribute to the volunteer engagement strategies
  • Work with the Director of DEI to implement an annual survey and make recommendations from the results provided
  • Support in the creation of an internal communications strategy to increase collaboration between our team members
  • Overseeing internal events
  • Strategizing creative engagement ideas, buddy systems, and more
  • Providing development opportunities for our volunteers
  • Increasing use of Slack, attendance at meetings, and a people-first culture
  • Providing emotional support to our volunteers and taking an active interest in their lives, health, and welfare
  • Encouraging honest feedback about everyone at the org to strengthen the community
  • Ensuring a truly inclusive community for people of all backgrounds
  • Managing a healthy attrition rate and upskilling volunteers during their time with us
  • Meet weekly with the COO
  • Meet fortnightly with the operational leadership team

What we expect of all volunteers

  • We use Slack as our primary method of internal communications, we ask that all volunteers check this regularly to communicate with their team and stay up to date with the latest developments.
  • All teams have a weekly meeting which all individuals need to attend.
  • We hold 10 all-in-volunteer meetings a year and ask that volunteers attend a minimum of 4

As you are applying for a leadership position, please read our leadership guidance below.

  • The goal of leadership is to inspire other people to succeed, to ensure they are meeting their tasks and deadlines (i.e., to project manage), to build a positive and collaborative culture/community, and to think about ideas for the strategic vision of the org.
  • As a leader, you should understand the basics of the work that everyone on your team does. Leaders often work harder than anyone else on their team. If a ball drops on your team, you end up having to finish the work.
  • Good leaders take responsibility and give the credit back to others on their team.
  • Good leaders praise publicly and criticize privately.
  • Good leaders immediately escalate any issues they don’t know how to deal with to Human Resources or their superiors.
  • Good leaders create a collaborative community with others at their same hierarchy level and do not gossip about other people OR other teams.
Who we are looking for

We are looking for a passionate and reliable individual who has experience in the following:

  • A passion for learning and develop particularly leadership
  • Experience working with volunteers and implementing engagement strategies
  • A positive,'can-do’ attitude with a willingness to learn and upskill.
  • Sound interpersonal communication skills.
  • Strong capacity for strategic and analytical thinking.
  • The ability to adapt to different peoples working styles for harmonious collaboration.
  • Effective time management, highly reliable and sufficient time to volunteer with the DG Sentinel.
Commitment & Location

10 hours per week. We require a year-long commitment for most positions. We can be flexible on time and support vacations and unlimited leave with advance notice. Many of our current team work full-time and volunteer in the evenings. We make sure no one feels overwhelmed or overworked while ensuring extra work doesn’t fall on other volunteers last-minute.

This is a virtual opportunity and you will need your own device and an internet connection. At this time we are unable to support with any associated costs, as even our C-Suite is volunteer.
