Goodwill of Southwestern PA is looking for individuals who enjoy helping others to make an impact in the adult learning community by assisting instructors in the ONLINE classroom. Hi there! We have a student who recently passed 3 of the 4 GED exams. All he has left is social studies. He's already passed a general reading GED exam, so his reading skills are up to par. He just needs a little boost to help him pass this last test quickly. He is only available 6-8:00pm ONLINE Tue/Thurs and tutoring would have to be both days. It could be a minimum of 3 hours (2 sessions of 1.5 hours) or up to 4 hours each week. I'd wager he could pass in 2 months, maybe 3, provided he's offered 3-4 hours of tutoring per week. He would then be a high school graduate! YAY! To help this student, you'd first meet with me briefly on Zoom to go over things, fill out a volunteer application, complete a free and quick PA criminal background check, and then we'd help you to learn about what students need to know for this exam. It's mainly reading comprehension skills such as: reading and understanding tables and bar graphs, making inferences, sequence of events, analysis of information sources, interpreting political cartoons and propaganda, etc. Once you're prepped, you could hop onto our 6-8pm Zoom class and tutor him in a breakout room. Support is always available from me, the Volunteer Coordinator, and from our adult ed instructors. Those interested can contact Trisha Powell, Education Volunteer Recruiter by text at 412-498-0412 or by email at trisha.powell@goodwillswpa.org
