The National Scleroderma Foundation Tri-State Chapter is a federally qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to serving the needs of the scleroderma community.
The mission of the Scleroderma Foundation Tri-State Chapter is threefold:
- To provide educational and emotional support to people with scleroderma and their families;
- To stimulate and support research designed to identify the cause and cure of scleroderma as well as improve methods of treatment and;
- To enhance the public’s awareness of this disease.
What is Scleroderma?
Scleroderma, or systemic sclerosis, is a chronic connective tissue disease generally classified as one of the autoimmune rheumatic diseases. The word "scleroderma" comes from two Greek words: "sclero" meaning hard, and "derma" meaning skin. Hardening of the skin is one of the most visible manifestations of the disease.
Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma Walk
The Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma Walk is held annually throughout the country to raise funds to support our mission. Volunteers are needed in many different areas in order to pull off a successful walk. Some of the positions include:
- Set-up
- Food (procuring & handling)
- Advertising (signs & posters)
- Media Contacts and Interviews
- Registration
- Raffle/Silent Auction (solicit for items & day of walk)
- Entertainment
- Tents, Tables & Chairs
- Pictures & Videos
- Clean-up

Description
The Scleroderma Foundation Tri-State Chapter, established in 1981 is a federally qualified 501(c)(3) nonprofit dedicated to serving the needs of the scleroderma community.
- The Tri-State Chapter continues to fund the Scleroderma Foundation's Peer-Review Research Grant Funding Program with assistance through the fundraising efforts of the Stepping Out to Cure Scleroderma Walks by our community. These walks are held in various locations throughout the Tri-State region of NY, NJ & CT bringing together volunteers and communities to support one goal in finding a cure for scleroderma.
- Support groups are established across our service area, including virtual support groups, and we continually promote starting new groups in under-served areas.
- We present annual educational forums, where leading scleroderma researchers, doctors, and other professionals are available to patients and caregivers.
