Join Carnegie Science Center’s adult volunteer program and help engage and educate our visitors about science, history, and technology, and welcome visitors to the museum! You don’t need to have a science, history, or technology background, just an interest in sharing your passion with our visitors.

Carnegie Science Center is seeking adult volunteers to volunteer in the following areas:

  1. Miniature Railroad & Village
  2. Gallery Experiences
  3. Animals & Habitats

Miniature Railroad & Village

  • Volunteers will assist floor presenters in by engaging in informal, positive, informational, and personalized interactions with Carnegie Science Center visitors of all ages
  • Share information about the history depicted through the Village and the technology of the trains. Does not require familiarity of operating trains.
  • Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for a minimum of 6 months. Shifts are available from 10am-2pm Sunday, Friday, and Saturday or 1-5pm Monday and Wednesday. The Science Center is open Wednesday-Monday.

Gallery Experiences

  • Assist floor presenters in engaging visitors of all ages, help them experience exhibits, and have fun learning science.
  • Assist staff with exhibit demonstrations that cover various science concepts and topics
  • Exhibits include Mars: The Next Giant Leap, Bricksburgh, Little Learner Clubhouse, BodyWorks, SpacePlace, H2OH, Highmark SportsWorks, and our new traveling exhibition The Science Behind Pixar
  • Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for at least 6 months. Shifts are available 10am-2pm and 1-5pm. The Science Center is open Wednesday-Monday.

Animals & Habitats

  • Engage visitors through floor demonstrations and animal presentations to share information on each species, local ecosystems, and watersheds
  • Presentations - public speaking, animal handling, giving direction, crowd management
  • Time Commitment: 4 events in a 6 month period. Flexible events.

Qualifications:

  • Must attend a volunteer orientation before they can begin to volunteer
  • Must be comfortable working with the public, including families, students, and adults
  • Must be comfortable communicating with visitors
  • Takes initiative to interact and communicate with visitors

Clearances:

  • Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances.
  • Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for volunteers.
  • Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34).
  • Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114).
  • The Animals & Habitats volunteer position requires a PA fishing licence, per Pennsylvania state law, to present with animals on the museum floor. Any license fees are the responsibility of the volunteer.
