Join Carnegie Science Center’s adult volunteer program and help engage and educate our visitors about science and technology! You don’t need to have a science background, just an interest in sharing your love of science with our visitors. Carnegie Science Center is seeking adult volunteers to volunteer in the following areas: STEM Center Fab Lab Gallery Experiences Museum Events STEM Center Contribute to the day-to-day operations of our STEM programs by working both behind the scenes and on the floor during events and programming. Aid staff in event preparation, which may include prepping materials and signage or helping to set up for an event Supporting staff during events, which may include staffing a registration table, directing exhibitors and school groups throughout the facility, distributing and collecting evaluations, running hands-on science activities, or other duties needed by staff Assist with data entry Time Commitment: weekday shifts with a minimum 6-month commitment. Shifts are flexible, based on STEM Center needs and volunteer availability. Fab Lab Fab Lab is a digital fabrication laboratory for innovation and invention. Work with staff to demonstrate the capabilities of design software, 3D printers, laser cutters, vinyl cutters, and milling machines* *Volunteers do not need to already know how to operate this equipment. Training will be provided. Help guests troubleshoot projects. Assist staff with Fab Lab classes, demonstrations, and equipment. Time Commitment: every other Friday, 5-9pm, for a minimum of 6 months Gallery Experiences Assist floor presenters in engaging visitors of all ages, help them experience exhibits, and have fun learning science. Assist staff with exhibit demonstrations that cover various science concepts and topics Exhibits include Mars: The Next Giant Leap, Bricksburgh, Little Learner Clubhouse, BodyWorks, SpacePlace, H2OH, Highmark SportsWorks, and our new traveling exhibition Vikings: Warriors of the North Sea Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for at least 6 months. Shifts are available 10am-2pm and 1-5pm. The Science Center is open Wednesday-Monday through Memorial Day and open 7 days a week in the summer. Museum Events Serve as ambassadors for Carnegie Science Center during events and contribute to our mission to educate and inspire guests through our events Assist with hands-on science activities and demonstrations that cover various science concepts and topics Greet and welcome visitors and direct them throughout the facility Assist with light set-up or tear-down duties Time Commitment: volunteer for at least 4 events in a 6-month period. Events occur weekdays, weekends, daytime, and evening. Shifts are ~4 hours long. Volunteers will be notified when an event requires volunteer support and can choose to assist with opportunities that fit into their schedule. Qualifications: Must attend a volunteer orientation before they can begin to volunteer Must be comfortable working with the public, including families, students, and adults Must be comfortable communicating with visitors Takes initiative to interact and communicate with visitors Volunteer Benefits: Free parking for scheduled volunteer shifts Museum discounts Clearances: Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for volunteers. Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34). Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114).

You don’t need to have a history or technology background, just an interest in sharing your love of tech and history with our visitors. Carnegie Science Center is seeking adult volunteers to volunteer in the following areas: Miniature Railroad & Village USS Requin submarine Vikings: Warriors of the North Sea traveling exhibition Miniature Railroad & Village Volunteers will assist floor presenters in by engaging in informal, positive, informational, and personalized interactions with Carnegie Science Center visitors of all ages Share information about the history depicted through the Village and the technology of the trains. Does not require familiarity of operating trains. Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for a minimum of 6 months. Shifts are available Sunday, Monday, and Wednesday from 10am-2pm as well as Wednesday-Monday, 1-5pm. USS Requin Greet guests as they arrive for tours, collect tour tickets, and help escort guests to the Requin, located on the Ohio River Be stationed at one of three submarine stations to engage visitors, share information, and answer questions Assist with demonstrations about the history and engineering of the USS Requin Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for 6 months. Shift are available from 10am-2pm or 1-5pm from March through December Volunteers within the submarine must have full mobility. Vikings: Warriors of the North Sea traveling exhibition Carnegie Science Center’s newest traveling exhibition runs February 11 through September 4, 2023 Picture in your head an image of a Viking. If you imagined a man in a horned helmet ready to pillage a city, you are accustomed to popular representations of Vikings, which are historically incorrect and overgeneralized. In VIKINGS: Warriors of the North Sea, you gain a fuller image of Vikings as traders, settlers, explorers, and highly qualified craftsmen, architects, and engineers. The exhibition features more than 160 artifacts-some never seen outside Scandinavia-including jewelry, funeral urns, weapons, silver hoards, game pieces, and clothing. Visitors can build a Viking ship using a touch screen, dress up like the Norsemen, and experience the weight and balance between sword handle and sword blade. Assist floor presenters in engaging visitors of all ages, help them experience the exhibit, and have fun learning about the history and technology of Vikings. Assist staff with exhibit demonstrations that cover various concepts and topics Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for the 7-month run of the exhibit. Shifts are available 10am-2pm and 1-5pm. Position Title: Group Services Assistant Goal or Purpose of the Position: Carnegie Science Center delights, educates, and inspires through interactive experiences in science and technology. Volunteers will assist Service & Engagement Dept. staff in welcoming and orienting groups to Carnegie Science Center. Responsibilities: Greet buses as they arrive; provide drivers with maps/directions for parking Greet group visitors with a warm and welcoming attitude. Direct groups from buses to orientation area in the Group Services area. Pass out group stickers to group members. Direct groups to store lunches in the group lunch storage area Monitor group lunches and ensure groups end their lunch period on time Parameters: Volunteers will not be responsible for administrating first aid Volunteers will not supervise youth or visitors Volunteers will not sell handle group services payment or money Time Commitment: Minimum one 4-hour shift per week for at least 6 months + mandatory orientation Shifts will begin between 9-10am and run until 1-2pm for a 4-hour length. Shifts are available every day, Monday-Friday, April-August. Shifts are available on an as-needed basis Monday-Friday, September-March, based on group bookings. Qualifications: Volunteer will be moving around for most of the shift to greet/escort groups and navigate any lunch needs. Must be able to move around the Science Center and board a school bus to talk with bus drivers and chaperones. Carnegie Science Center is seeking adult volunteers to assist in the following areas that focus on welcoming visitors and providing great customer service: Group Services Volunteer Visitor Services Volunteer Rangos Giant Cinema Group Services Volunteer Welcome and orient groups to Carnegie Science Center Greet buses and groups as they arrive; direct drivers and groups as needed Direct groups from buses to orientation area in the Group Services area. Monitor group lunches and ensure groups end their lunch period on time Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for 6 months. Shifts start between 9-10am. From April-August, shifts are available every Monday-Friday. From September-March, shifts are available Monday-Friday on as needed basis based on group bookings. Visitor Services Welcome visitors and families to Carnegie Science Center Volunteers may be stationed at our Welcome Desk (Information Desk) in the main lobby to answer guest questions Volunteers may also be stationed in the lobby to provide visitors with site maps, direct guess in the building, and answer FAQs throughout the day. Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for 6 months. Shifts are available Sunday, 10am-2pm; Saturday, 10am-2pm; or Saturday, 1-5pm Rangos Giant Cinema Welcome visitors to Rangos Giant Cinema Answer FAQs about Rangos Giant Cinema and Carnegie Science Center Help take tickets, pass out and collect 3D glasses, and assist those who may have accessibility needs. Assist with concession stand Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for 6 months. Shifts are available 10am-2pm or 1-5pm.
