Join Carnegie Science Center’s adult volunteer program as a Museum Event Volunteer and help engage and educate our visitors about science and technology! You don’t need to have a science background, just an interest in sharing your love of science with our visitors. Museum Event Volunteers Serve as ambassadors for Carnegie Science Center during events and contribute to our mission to connect people and science, igniting curiosity that endures for a lifetime. Assist with hands-on science activities and demonstrations that cover various science concepts and topics Greet and welcome visitors and direct them throughout the facility Assist with light set-up or tear-down duties Time Commitment: volunteer for at least 4 events in a 6-month period. Events occur weekdays, weekends, daytime, and evening. Shifts are ~4-5 hours long. Volunteers will be notified when events requires volunteer support and can sign up to assist with opportunities that fit into their schedule. Qualifications: Must attend a volunteer orientation before you can begin to volunteer Must be comfortable working with the public, including families, students, and adults Must be comfortable communicating with visitors Takes initiative to interact and communicate with visitors Volunteer Benefits: Free parking for scheduled volunteer shifts Museum discounts Clearances: Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Act 33 and 34 Clearances are free for volunteers. Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for at least 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34). Volunteers who have lived in Pennsylvania for less than 10 years must have their Child Abuse History Clearance (Act 33) and Criminal Record Check Clearance (Act 34) plus an FBI Fingerprint Clearance (Act 114).

You don’t need to have a science, history, or technology background, just an interest in sharing your passion with our visitors. Carnegie Science Center is seeking adult volunteers to volunteer in the following areas: Miniature Railroad & Village Gallery Experiences Miniature Railroad & Village Volunteers will assist floor presenters in by engaging in informal, positive, informational, and personalized interactions with Carnegie Science Center visitors of all ages Share information about the history depicted through the Village and the technology of the trains. Does not require familiarity of operating trains. Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for a minimum of 6 months. Shifts are available from 10am-2pm Thursday or 1-5pm Monday and Wednesday. The Science Center is open Wednesday-Monday. Gallery Experiences Assist floor presenters in engaging visitors of all ages, help them experience exhibits, and have fun learning science. Assist staff with exhibit demonstrations that cover various science concepts and topics Exhibits include Mars: The Next Giant Leap, Bricksburgh, Little Learner Clubhouse, BodyWorks, SpacePlace, H2OH, Highmark SportsWorks, and our new traveling exhibition The Science Behind Pixar Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for at least 6 months. Shifts are available 10am-2pm Wednesday and 1-5pm Sunday, Wednesday, Thursday, and Friday. The Science Center is open Wednesday-Monday. Qualifications: Must attend a volunteer orientation before they can begin to volunteer Must be comfortable working with the public, including families, students, and adults Must be comfortable communicating with visitors Takes initiative to interact and communicate with visitors Volunteer Benefits: Free parking for scheduled volunteer shifts Museum discounts Clearances: Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances. Join Carnegie Science Center’s adult volunteer program as a Buhl Planetarium Volunteer or Skywatch Volunteer and help engage and educate our visitors about science and astronomy! You don’t need to have a science or astronomy background, just an interest in sharing your love of science and astronomy with our visitors. Buhl Planetarium Volunteers Conduct science activities and hands-on demonstrations with planetarium guests. Assist with day-to-day operations of the Buhl Planetarium, including line/crowd control, seating, preparing the planetarium for shows, making building announcements, and answering guests' questions. Volunteers may also be asked to help planetarium department with special events and in the observatory. Time Commitment: one 4-hour shift per week for a minimum of 6 months. Shifts are available from 10am-2pm or 11am-3pm Monday and Friday. The Science Center is open Wednesday-Monday. Skywatch Volunteers Assist with/operate telescopes during Skywatch and/or other Buhl Planetarium programs Volunteers may be asked to help planetarium department with special events and in the observatory. Conduct science activities and hands-on demonstrations with planetarium guests. Please note that Skywatch programs occur outdoors in low-light conditions. Activities will be set up on the Science Center roof, which may be cold and/or windy, depending on weather conditions. Time Commitment: Minimum 4 events between April and September. Shifts may occur 1-2 times a month from 8pm to midnight. Qualifications: Must attend a volunteer orientation before you can begin to volunteer Must be comfortable working with the public, including families, students, and adults Must be comfortable communicating with visitors Takes initiative to interact and communicate with visitors Volunteer Benefits: Free parking for scheduled volunteer shifts Museum discounts Clearances: Upon acceptance into the program, all volunteers are required to provide and pay for background checks and clearances.
