Digitization Volunteer
Location(s): Sloan Museum of Discovery Archives
Department: Collections
Reports To: Archivist
Impact of the Position: You will primarily work out of the Sloan Museum Collections office. You will assist with digitizing a variety of content, mostly documents and photographs, to help increase public access to the many archival collections.
Essential Duties & Responsibilities:
- Adjust digitized images after scanning to be presentable online and in other electronic formats
- Digitize documents and photographs according to guide designed by Archivist to inform actions
- Use WideTek 25 scanner and associated software
This position is for you if:
- You are able to quickly understand/process new information
- You are passionate about history
- You have experience conducting or assisting with research using primary sources
You will succeed in this position if:
- You have knowledge of computers and common software (i.e. Microsoft Office, Windows) and Internet usage
- You have knowledge of electronic hardware such as scanners and digital cameras
Time Commitment: 3-4 hours per week (preferably Tuesdays - Fridays, 9:00 AM to 5:00 PM)
Orientation and Training: You will be taught how to use the WideTek 25 scanner and other software. Training and use of other hardware and software and proper handling techniques of photos will be provided. You will be provided a guide designed by Archivist to inform digitization actions.
Outside of specific department position training, all volunteers must complete a Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium volunteer orientation session that provide a building familiarization tour and an overview of volunteer related policies and procedures. Volunteers will be asked to submit to a criminal background check. Volunteers who do not agree to the background check will be refused assignment.
