Special Events Volunteer Location(s): Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium Department: Special Events Reports To: Special Events Manager Impact of the Position: You will provide support during special events hosted by Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium. Your support of staff during these events will help create meaningful experiences for guests. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Set up and take down of chairs, tables, linens, etc. Ensure that guests stay in appropriate areas of the buildings Ensure no food and drink leaven designated areas This position is for you if: You enjoy customer service roles You are comfortable talking with new people You prefer hands-on tasks You will succeed in this position if: You consider yourself to be flexible You are physically able to lift 20lbs or more You are comfortable standing for more than 1 hour at a time Time Commitment: 4-5 hours monthly as needed (scheduling occurs at least 14 days in advanced) Orientation and Training: Each special event is different so you will receive an email with information about the program and your role in it. You will need to arrive early for every event to receive a "run of show" training. Outside of specific department position training, all volunteers must complete a Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium volunteer orientation session that provide a building familiarization tour and an overview of volunteer related policies and procedures. Exhibit Gallery Volunteer Location(s): Sloan Museum of Discovery Department: Exhibits Reports To: Exhibit Coordinator and Lead Exhibit Technician Impact of the Position: You will help ensure galleries are safe, clean, and ready for all of our visitors. The maintenance and cleanliness of museum gallery space is of the utmost importance to ensure the both staff and visitors have a safe, welcoming, and secure environment. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Clean galleries and interactives Ensure that exhibits are working properly Help with the installation of temporary exhibits (requires longer hours) Assist with cleaning and maintenance of 1966 Buick Wildcat and other special projects as needed This position is for you if: Enjoy leaving a space nicer and brighter than when you entered Have an eye for detail Like to work with your hands You will succeed in this position if: You follow directions well You have experience with basic hand tools You are flexible and patient Time Commitment: minimum 2-4 hour shift 1 day a week (preferably Mondays) Orientation and Training: You will be required to complete safety training and will be trained one on one to perform any duties they are assigned. Gallery Guide Location(s): Sloan Museum of Discovery Department: Education and Outreach Reports To: Curator of Education and Outreach Impact of the Position: Gallery Guides honor visitor knowledge and experience opportunities to connect with museum interactives and expand ideas. Engaging with visitors of all ages, Gallery Guides encourage visitors to ask questions, try new things, and expand their thinking. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Engage in friendly, courteous, and welcoming interactions with visitors Monitor visitor experience while ensuring that museum galleries are clean and running smoothly Perform short demonstrations, tours, and activities throughout the museum This position is for you if: You enjoy sharing your love for learning with others You are friendly and approachable You enjoy interacting with new people of all ages, aptitudes, and backgrounds You will succeed in this position if: You feel comfortable initiating and holding conversations with new people You enjoy working collaboratively in a team environment You have good time management skills to thrive in when the museum is busy & take initiative during quieter moments to focus on tasks like ensuring that the galleries are neat and tidy Time Commitment: minimum 3-4 hours once a week while the museum is open to the public Orientation and Training: Additional training for Volunteer Gallery Guides include overview of the Floor Staff handbook and an in-depth guided tour of the gallery spaces and closets. Your first Gallery Guide Shift will allow you to train side by side with one of our Floor Staff Members. Volunteer Evaluator Location(s): Sloan Museum of Discovery Department: Education & Outreach Reports To: Director of Education & Outreach Impact of the Position: You will assist in the administration of a visitor survey that will inform staff about the visitor experience at Sloan Museum of Discovery. Data will include information on the accessibility and usability of interactives and exhibits. Surveys are essential to understand if Sloan Museum is meeting its goals. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Approach visitors to fill out a survey Maintain orderly records of completed surveys This position is for you if: You are passionate about making positive changes You are comfortable following specific instructions You will succeed in this position if: You have experience with evaluations and surveys You are comfortable initiating conversations with new people Time Commitment: minimum 1-2 hours a week any day the museum is open Orientation and Training: You will be trained on how to appropriately administer a paper and pencil survey so the accurate data is collected. Outside of specific department position training, all volunteers must complete a Sloan Museum of Discovery and Longway Planetarium volunteer orientation session that provide a building familiarization tour and an overview of volunteer related policies and procedures. Facilities Volunteer Location(s): Sloan Museum of Discovery, Longway Planetarium, Buick Gallery, and off-site warehouse Department: Facilities Reports To: Exhibits and Facilities Manager and Lead Facilities Technician Impact of the Position: You will help maintain the buildings that serve our community by assisting Facility staff to inspect, clean, and maintain building hardware and mechanical spaces, so every visitor and internal staff member can have a safe, welcoming, and secure environment. Essential Duties & Responsibilities: Based on your experience facilities and maintenance work: Carpenter Experience - Help maintain, clean, and repair doors, cabinets and other fixtures. Electrical Experience - Help replace lamps, clean lenses, and basic electrical trouble shooting. Plumbing Experience - Help service drains, clean, replace, and repair damaged pipes. This position is for you if: Like fixing things with your own hands Enjoy leaving a space nicer and brighter than when you entered You will succeed in this position if: You enjoy working on systems including those that new and old You have experience in electrical, plumbing, carpenter, painting, etc. Time Commitment: minimum 2-4 hour shift 1 day a week (preferably Mondays) Orientation and Training: You will need to complete a safety training based on the tools that used to complete work.
