The 12 Books Virtual Reading Program helps disadvantaged elementary children who are struggling with reading by pairing them with volunteers who read with them online.

The literacy gap has widened during the COVID-19 pandemic and disproportionately affects students living in poverty. In the elementary schools in Mesa that have the highest percentage of low-income families, only between 4%-27% of 3rd graders are proficient in reading. Kids in poverty who are not proficient by the end of 3rd grade are 13x less likely to graduate high school than their proficient peers not living in poverty. This puts them at a higher risk of experiencing homelessness, incarceration, and a continued cycle of poverty as adults.

You can help! Volunteers read with elementary students one-on-one for 30 minutes twice per week using a digital library shared through Zoom. This provides individual support to students who need it the most, helping them read independently and supporting their comprehension just by reading with them! This is a great opportunity for anyone looking to help out in their community and help break the cycle of poverty for kids in Mesa!

This program runs during the school year and the summer, and sessions are on weekdays between 2pm-4pm and 4:30pm-6pm. Summer sessions are more flexible and may include morning hours. Volunteers sign up for a time slot that works for them and are asked to commit to 12 weeks at a time.

We have 12-week sessions in the Fall, Spring, and Summer.

Please note: This is a virtual opportunity, but volunteers must live in Arizona.
