If you love dogs, want to meet friendly baboons, talk with parrots and feed carrots to donkeys and horses, then this is the volunteering opportunity for you.
The Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary in Zimbabwe is home to 52 different species and over 400 rescued birds and animals. We are a one-of-a-kind Sanctuary in Africa, located in beautiful Zimbabwe outside the capital Harare.
Volunteering at Twala gives you an opportunity to be part of our mission - to offer all animals and birds in need a safe haven. You will also be part of a community program that transforms the lives of rural dogs, and you'll learn more about conservation in our beautiful country.
We have places for volunteers of all ages, from all backgrounds. There is a daily charge for board and lodging, and you will live on site in a comfortable volunteer house, with all meals provided by our fabulous cook, who can cater easily for particular dietary needs.
Volunteers help by:
- preparing food for our animals
- helping give medicines and treatments
- walking our Waggley Tail Club to the dam on our premises
- helping with animal rescues
- working alongside staff and other volunteers
- helping staff with cleaning of enclosures and providing animal enrichment
- meeting fellow animal advocates and making friends from around the world.
With only 5 volunteers at any time, your experience will be hands-on, rewarding and life changing. We recommend a minimum two week stay at Twala. Many of our volunteers stay a month or more. There is a small, daily fee to cover the cost of food and board. All details will be provided when you express interest, with more info on our Volunteer Page at https://www.facebook.com/AnimalSanctuaryVolunteers/ or email Sarah Carter at twalavolunteering@gmail.com
Help us continue with our habitat of happiness.

About Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary
Location:
Goromonzi, Harare, ZW
Mission Statement
The Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary is 25km east of the capital city Harare in Zimbabwe, Africa. Founded in 2012, the Sanctuary’s mission is to provide a safe haven for animals in need, as well as to promote conservation and animal welfare in the extensive rural area of Goromonzi. The Twala Trust is a non profit organisation. We work to improve the quality of life of companion animals in rural households in the area surrounding our Sanctuary, assist with human/wildlife conflict in this area and provide sanctuary to displaced, injured and abandoned animals of all species. We provide practical, hands-on solutions for animal welfare and conservation measures in the Goromonzi area.
Description
A Unique Animal Sanctuary in Africa
The Twala Trust Animal Sanctuary is the only sanctuary of its kind in Zimbabwe, with a wildlife rescue and rehabilitation centre that incorporates an exotic pet rescue, a farm animal sanctuary and a kennel-free dog rescue. We run a longstanding, grassroots community outreach programme known as Doggy Tuesday, offering free veterinary care and support to rural companion animals. We are well-established in Zimbabwe and operate an ethical, hands-on, animal focused Sanctuary. We do not breed, buy, swap or sell animals.
Our role in the community is to help animals in need, providing veterinary care and support to our community in the process. Where possible, we release wild animals back into their natural habitats, and arrange adoptions for dogs and cats into suitable homes, although many of our rescues will live out their lives at the sanctuary, receiving the very best care possible from our dedicated team of Zimbabwean staff.
The work done at Twala is genuine and ethical and our volunteer opportunities provide a unique and rewarding experience for animal lovers.
