Step Up Ventura is a 501(C)(3) nonprofit organization supported primarily by volunteers and the generosity of private donors and foundations. Given the detrimental effects on development caused by homelessness, we know that young children experiencing homelessness benefit from receiving quality early care, education and therapeutic services. Many barriers limit children's access to these services. Our goal is to provide Ventura County children with quality essential services so they can excel at school and are less likely to experience homelessness as adults.
Our mission is to provide children experiencing homelessness or at risk of homelessness the opportunity to flourish by preparing them for kindergarten.
Volunteer Positions and Objectives: We currently have volunteering opportunities as a childcare volunteer (ages 0-2) and a classroom activities volunteer (ages 3-5). Learn more about each opportunity below:
Childcare Volunteer Hours: Flexible, 2 hours/day between 8:30 am - 6 pm is ideal. 1 or more days/week. Orientation and training are provided. You will work with our staff in the 0 to 2-year old classrooms. Occasionally children will need positive discipline or reinforcement of classroom expectations. You will work with the teacher to provide this type of assistance. Duties include but are not limited to helping with:
- Comforting crying babies/toddlers
- Playing one-on-one
- Mealtimes and naptimes
- Babies exploring their environment
- Patience, kindness, understanding
- Playfulness
- Ability to get up and down from the floor repeatedly
- Good nonverbal communication skills
- One-on-one time with children for social and educational development
- Classroom and playground activities
- Interacting with families
- Mealtimes and naptimes
- A child's adjustment to drop-off and pick-up times
- Activities and learning games
- Patience, kindness, and understanding
- Ability to laugh
- Punctuality

Description
We are considered a new organization comparitively, since we are about five years going. Started by a grass-roots of 3 professional people who became aware of the gap in educational and social services for the 6 week old to 5 year old child belonging to families that are homeless or at risk to homelessness. Our non profit provides trauma-therapy and one on one attention in the classroom of schools where we are providing the tuition fee for the children to be in daycare. The schools where the children attend, have the hours of 7:00 AM- 6:00 PM, that provide the opportunity for families to be employed or educated.
Today the original social worker in the grass roots group is the executive and program director, working in the office and the classroom, Step Up Ventura would like to expand into other preestablished daycare centers where our program may be implemented.
