For more than 30 years, Northstar Tutoring’s mission has been to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. We achieve this by matching students with their own volunteer tutor/mentor who helps them once a week to complete their homework, study for upcoming tests/quizzes or work on supplemental education materials.
We are excited to be partnering with Harriet Tubman Elementary school for the 2022-2023 school year and are looking for volunteers to work with our students at this location. Volunteers can sign up to work one-on-one with their own student or work with a small group (2-3 students) if they prefer. Since these students are in elementary school they are particularly in need of help with basic reading and math skills. Students will either have homework with them to complete or will be provided materials from Northstar. Sessions will take place Mondays-Thursdays 4:00-4:45 pm at Harriet Tubman Elementary (3101 13th St. NW) and volunteers are welcome to sign up for 1-4 days per week.
A few additional facts:
- We accept new students throughout the year so volunteers can sign up at any point and be matched with a new student. We usually ask that volunteers commit to the remainder of whatever school year they join in.
- No previous teaching experience is required (approximately 90% of volunteers have never taught/tutored before).
- We will be working with students in grades K-5th and volunteers can request a specific age range to be matched with.
- Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate.
Please note, a background check form must be completed in advance of volunteering. Considering this form can take several weeks to process we strongly encourage people to sign up as soon as possible. If you are interested please reach out to Jennifer Townsend at JTownsend@northstartutoring.org.
Thank you so much for considering working with a Northstar student!
