ORGANIZATION: Northstar Tutoring

Northstar Students

For more than 30 years, Northstar Tutoring’s mission has been to help low-income and underserved K-12th grade students in the D.C. area reach their full potential by overcoming barriers to personal and academic success. We achieve this by matching students with their own volunteer tutor/mentor who helps them once a week to complete their homework, study for upcoming tests/quizzes or work on supplemental education materials.

We have a number of students who attend local bilingual schools and we are in need of Spanish speaking volunteers for our Mt. Pleasant Library location(3160 16th St. NW). Sessions take place Wednesday and Thursday evenings (volunteers usually just participate one night per week, but are welcome to do both!) from 6:30-8:00 pm.

A few additional facts:

  • Students bring homework to complete with their volunteer. If they do not have homework/enough homework for the 90 minute session, Northstar will provide materials for you to work on with your student.
  • We accept new students throughout the year so volunteers can sign up at any point and be matched with a new student. We usually ask that volunteers commit to the remainder of whatever school year they join in.
  • No previous teaching experience is required (approximately 90% of volunteers have never taught/tutored before).
  • We work with students in grades K-12 and volunteers can request a specific age range to be matched with.
  • Volunteers must be at least 18 years old to participate.
