Organization overview: Established in 2021, Captain Scott Legacy Society (CSLS) is on a mission to inspire and empower people of all ages to find meaningful purpose in their communities as volunteers. The organization strengthens the volunteer spirit through impactful storytelling, as well as accessible volunteer training and recognition initiatives. We’re on a mission to promote social good!

Opportunity : Our biggest priority at Captain Scott Legacy Society is to generate and amplify positive narratives around volunteerism. Often, the media continually churns out stories that are the most sensational- capturing only the extreme elements of a community. CSLS aims to balance the media’s stories and provide more representative coverage of the community by curating and sharing stories and articles about volunteers and other topics related to volunteerism. The writer will contribute content that will be shared on our public-facing platforms, including our social media, blog, newsletters, digital community magazine, and in-print marketing material.

English major students and recent graduates in the writing field would be perfect for this portfolio-building opportunity. We can provide a reference letter if needed.

Job brief: We are looking for a talented content writer to be a megaphone for volunteerism. They will use the power of storytelling to tell positive, heartwarming stories that people care about. They may be researching, interviewing, and/or writing a story about a volunteer’s specific volunteer impact or writing about general volunteerism topics. The goals of the story content are to engage with volunteers on topics that interest them; build a volunteer community that feels appreciated; recognize and validate volunteers and the important work that they do; and support local small-to-medium nonprofits with their volunteer recruitment and retention efforts.

Responsibilities:

  • Pitch, prepare, write and/or produce interesting stories about volunteers and/or volunteer topics such as benefits of volunteering, upcoming volunteer opportunities, social causes and justice, how to be a better volunteer, etc.
  • Edit multimedia and traditionally written content focusing on volunteer stories and recognition
  • Interview volunteers from various causes and non-profits, both local and national, to develop stories
  • Network on behalf of the organization in order to find and develop more stories
  • Liaise with various creative professionals including journalists, videographers, communication specialists, if available

Requirements:

  • Work or volunteer experience in the content writing industry and/or a strong interest to learn and participate in the sector
  • Excellent communication and interviewing skills
  • Multitasking and analytical skills
  • Must hold oneself to professional standards
  • Interest in sourcing stories that are diverse and inclusive
  • Commitment to continued learning
  • A willingness to learn and receive support from a team
  • Assets: Education in writing, and/or communications field, experience with SEO, passionate about social justice and influencing change through storytelling journalism
