Mission Statement
The Morgan Duke Conservation Society operates as a registered nonprofit 501(c)(3) environmental conservation organization. Our primary objective revolves around safeguarding, enriching, and upholding the integrity of natural resources and ecosystems situated within untamed woodlands and forest preserves. These areas currently confront an array of challenges, notably issues related to overcrowding that are pervasive across wild forests and forest preserves nationwide. Simultaneously, we are dedicated to establishing and nurturing wildlife habitats tailored to species reliant on nascent woodlands. Moreover, we are committed to rehabilitating vegetation that has suffered due to human intervention. This multifaceted mission is achieved through diligent research, impactful educational initiatives, and proactive stewardship agreements.
Description
James Sullivan, the President and Founder of the Morgan Duke Conservation Society, established the organization in response to a poignant experience he had while camping in a small, pristine recreational area within the southeastern region of the Adirondack Preserve in 2006, and on subsequent occasions. Witnessing numerous challenges plaguing this locale-ranging from litter accumulation to vegetation destruction caused by vehicular intrusion and vandalism-he felt compelled to take action. In 2013, James Sullivan formalized his commitment by establishing the Morgan Duke Conservation Society. Initially consisting of merely six volunteers, which included himself and his family, their efforts were concentrated on the aforementioned recreation area during the summer months of each year. During these camping excursions, they diligently collaborated with forest rangers, engaging in activiti es such as afforestation, litter removal, and restoration painting.
