ORGANIZATION: Rescuing Leftover Cuisine Inc

About RLC

The mission of RLC is to redistribute excess food to feed people experiencing food insecurity. Rescuing Leftover Cuisine (RLC) is a nonprofit organization committed to fighting food insecurity and preventing wasted food . We have cultivated a network of dedicated food rescuers who bring food directly from our food donors to nonprofit recipients , letting neighbors help neighbors while reaping the environmental and economic benefits of reducing wasted food . Founded in 2013, our simple, but elegant model has saved over 8 million pounds of food since our inception

Why RLC
  • We’re passionate about food rescue and its potential to eliminate hunger
  • We work hard, but we have fun doing it: monthly team-building activities, cooking competitions, and more!
  • We aim high: we’ve grown every year, in terms of both new partners and pounds of food rescued, and we’re projected to continue that growth trend each year moving forward

Responsibilities:

Volunteer of the Week: Every other week, the photographer must select a volunteer based on one of the suggestions from their manager (accessible through Trello website). An email must be sent to the individual letting them know that they have been selected, and a date/time must be figured out based on their availability (They must consent to have their photos taken). The photographer must attend the event with the volunteer of the week, and take photos of them in action rescuing food. Afterward, you will do an off-camera interview with the subject and ask them a series of 5 questions, based on their experience and motivation for participating as a volunteer with RLC. Upload the photos and interview audio to google drive.

RLC Food Donor Photos: Every week, the photographer must reach out through email or phone to one of our food donor participants and ask if they’d like to participate in a food donor appreciation post on social media. They must set up the date/time/event which works best for both parties. Sign-up for the event on the RLC website. Prior to the event start, alert the lead rescuer that you will be attending their event and that you will be taking photos. Once you’ve arrived at the food donor establishment, introduce yourself as part of RLC’s staff. Photos should include a mix of staff, volunteers, food, group photos, action shots, and interiors and exteriors of the establishment. Upload the photos to google drive.

Nonprofit Recipient Photos: Every week, the photographer must reach out through email or phone to one of our nonprofit recipients, and ask if they’d like to participate in an appreciation post on social media. The photographer must set up the date/time/event which works best for both parties. Sign-up for the event. Prior to the event start, alert the lead rescuer that you will be attending their event and that you will be taking photos. Once you’ve arrived at the nonprofit recipient, introduce yourself as part of RLC’s staff. Photos should include a mix of staff, volunteers, food, group photos, action shots, and interiors and exteriors of the establishment. Since our nonprofit recipients (The Bowery Mission etc.) are very sensitive about consent, make sure that you are given the proper permission from anyone that you photograph. Upload the photos to google drive.
