Short-Term Volunteers are needed to support Girl Scout Outdoor Affinity Troops! This blended experience consists of weekly virtual meetings plus exciting in-city field trip opportunities!

Apply for this position at the following application link: https://girlscoutsnyc.formstack.com/forms/shorttermvolunteer

Affinity Troops are specialized, level-specific cohorts that meet virtually over 5-7 week periods and allow Girl Scouts from across NYC to connect and explore a shared topic of interest. Trained volunteers facilitate weekly, virtual troop meetings and occasional in-person events that help Girl Scouts take a deeper dive into the designated theme. Participating Girl Scouts complete a variety of badge activities, take part in Girl Scout traditions, and engage with the Girl Scout Leadership Experience (GSLE).

The theme for Girl Scouts of Greater New York’s Summer 2022 Affinity Troops is: The Outdoors! Girl Scouts will discover nature in our urban environment, enhance their skills of observation, and develop a Take Action project - a data-driven solution to a problem in their community. Plus, all participants will earn their "Think Like a Citizen Scientist" Journey Award and have the chance to participate in the Girl Scout Tree Promise patch program - a rare and exciting opportunity for New York City Girl Scouts!

POSITION OVERVIEW

Outdoor Affinity Troop volunteers will work in teams of 2-3 to plan and facilitate 5-7 high-quality troop meetings for a group of 10-25 Girl Scouts, using a flexible program outline, suggested timeline, and list of activity options provided by GSGNY. Volunteers will also help coordinate at least one outdoor experience for their troop by attending an in-person event hosted by GSGNY or finding their own opportunity.

WHY VOLUNTEER?

In addition to making a difference in the lives of NYC Girl Scouts through mentorship and support, volunteers can also look forward to learning new things themselves! Deepen your appreciation for the outdoors and while exploring some of the natural areas in your own backyard. Plus, build confidence in your facilitation skills and science communication abilities. Documented volunteer hours as well as professional network opportunities are also available.

TRAINING PROVIDED

All volunteers will be required to complete a self-guided online training course (2-2.5 hours total) AND attend three live training workshops on Zoom (3 hours total). The self-guided courses will introduce you to the Girl Scout Leadership Experience and provide level-specific guidance for how to run troop meetings. Live workshop topics will include Safety and Virtual Meeting Logistics, Think Like a Citizen Scientist 101, and Virtual Engagement and Games. Live workshops will be offered several times between June 21 and July 1.
