Mission Statement
The Emerson Avenue Community Garden Club (EACGC) is a 501(c)(3) tax exempt organization run by dedicated volunteers working to develop a one acre portion of the campus of Orville Wright Middle School into a sustainable, organic food garden and green space shared by the school and the public at large for the purposes of education and community building.
Description
In 2011, a group of dedicated volunteers took a derelict piece of land in Westchester and began a labor of love that gradually transformed it into a thriving, bountiful green space that brings a special sense of enjoyment to our entire community.
The garden is a continuous, on-going project that depends on the combined efforts of its members and volunteers. Its success relies on community involvement. EACGC provides educational activities in gardening and food preservation, such as Seed Saving with Girl Scouts, Gardening for Orville Wright students, Canning, Beekeeping, Soil Testing, Cover Crops for Soil Building, Composting, Edible Landscaping, Grow LA Victory Garden Initiative Classes, and more. EACGC sponsors and participates in many community events, including the July 4 th parade, and WAM Block Party. Most recently, in partnership with the Westchester Rotary, EACGC completed accessibility pathways.
Community gardens are a vital cog in the machinery of healthy, vibrant neighborhoods. They provide a tangible and hopeful sign of renewal, and of the potential of growth given the right mix of intention, energy and nurturing.
