Astronomy Program Assistant

ORGANIZATION: National Park Service

Hear the gentle lapping of waves on Blue Mesa and the calls of nighthawks, breathe in the scent of the fir forests and sagelands, and discover a kaleidoscope of wildflower colors. The astronomy program assistant is stationed in a National Park Service housing area 15 miles west of Gunnison, Colorado.

Duties - Researching, preparing, and presenting hour long astronomy themed programs at the Elk Creek campground and the Gunnison Valley Observatory in the City of Gunnison, collecting night sky data for the International Dark Sky Association, outreach events, operation of a small telescope, staffing the Elk Creek Visitor Center for the National Park Service, informal interpretation along trails, and other similar duties. Program audiences range from 20 to 70 people. Programs are presented in the evening twice a week.
